St. Louis Cardinals 2 at Minnesota Twins 4, F -- The 1987 World Series between the Twins and Cardinals brought a whole new meaning to the term "home-field advantage." It marked the first time that the home team won all of its games in a series. It was also the first time that World Series games were played indoors, at Minnesota's Metrodome. Inside were deafening crowds of more than 55,000 screaming fans. The "Homer Hanky" joined the baseball lexicon, as Twins fans waved them with frenzy.

I was 26 years old and working in Springfield, Missouri. My office had a window to the sales floor of the lumber store I was working for. I had the World Series on the store’s speakers because all of the employees were Cardinals fans and I was the only Twins fan. When the Twins won the 7th game I stood in front of the window with my arms raised. All of the employees were flipping me off. 😂😂😂

I was living back home in California in 1987 I was in 10th Grade in High School when the Minnesota Twins won the Series. I was playing baseball in High School and an old friend of mine who liked the St. Louis Cardinals told me I was picking the wrong team and the Twins where going to lose! lol.......I told him WRONG I loved the Twins back than and they were going to win this thing! I started liking the Minnesota Twins even before they started to Win like this and everybody thought I was crazy. I had confidence in Minnesota and now 30 yrs later after I moved to Minnesota in 08 from California I live in Rochester MN in Twins Territory :) and win or lose GO MINNESOTA TWINS!!! what a magical year 1987 was!! As a Twins fan 27 years removed from the moment and I'm still in awe at how our guys pulled it off. Predicted not to make a ripple in our division. Expected to be nothing but cat food in the ALCS. Beat The Cardinals, the National League's premier franchise of all teams no less, in the Fall Classic, , no way in HELL! 1987 was a long time ago. and I've made the trip from peppy teenager to strolling middle age since then. And I am still In awe. RIP Kirby

Lorrell Hanson Yeah, they were expected to finish at/near the bottom of the West, they won the division but had the fewest wins( 85 )of all the postseason teams, yet they took the Tigers( who had the best record overall that year )out in just 5 games, then went the distance to beat the Cardinals in 7. Beating two of the best teams in baseball to win their 1st World Series championship? Not too shabby really....anyone who still says the Twins "fluked" their way to a title in '87 probably never has even watched any highlights yet lol ;)

The Twins won only 85 games that season and their World Series victory made them the team with the lowest win percentage in MLB to win the World Series until 2006 when it was eclipsed by the St. Louis Cardinals that year when they only won 83 games and won the series against the Detroit Tigers. The only other team to make it to the World Series with that low of a win percentage was the 1973 NY Mets and their "YA GOTTA BELIEVE" year before they fell short against the Oakland A's that year in the Series.
@ADEAL918
@ADEAL918 3 жыл бұрын
Thing is though the Twins weren’t so much mediocre that season as they were Jekyll and Hyde. In two ways. Everyone following them that year knows about the home/away dichotomy: 56-25 at home, 29-52 on the road. (And most of that latter statistic was from the 2nd half of the season-they were only a few games under .500 on the road in the first half.). But there’s another one even more important for post-season that means they matched up much better in playoff series than they overall record would indicate. In games where either Viola or Blyleven started, they were 45-28, but only 40-49 when anyone else started. But since in a best of 7 series, Viola or Blyleven would start 5 of the 7 games, they actually matched up pretty well against anyone,

@Jewel Clark - I am not sure, but perhaps the reason '87 game 6 was a day game was because the Vikings were hosting the Broncos that weekend, which was also marking the return of the regular NFL players after the strike. If the WS ended after game 6, they had more time to change over the Metrodome to football with a WS game 6 played Saturday afternoon. If the WS went to 7, then they just planned on moving the Vikings game to Monday night, which is what ended up happening.

so many close calls in this game that could have went either way. Hrbek should've been called for runners interference and Herr should have been safe in the top of the 6th. Dan Schatzeder, Les Straker, Keith Atherton, Sal Butera. If I recall, Kent Hrbeck had the highest salary that year around 1.3 Million - and was always overshadowed by Yankee 1B Don Mattingly - who was a great but Hrbeck covered 1st every bit as good. This team was about chemistry - not big salaries and buying the trophy. What an amazing team! I'll cherish that signed ball forever.

As they said, the '87 Twins were 150-1 odds to win the World Series when the season began, but they pulled it off. :-) Led by a low-key yet very classy manager in Tom Kelly. 85 wins, only would've placed them 5th in the AL East that year, but won the AL West & took full advantage of homefield @ the MetroDome. :-) Outlasted the Cardinals( 95 wins )in a compelling 7-game Fall Classic.... :-) Frank "Sweet Music" Viola the MVP, what a Series for sure!!

You've heard how loud the Metrodome gets during Vikings games? My dad was at this game, and all he said was, "It was as loud as when the Vikings scored a touchdown; for three and a half hours". He went on to tell me that when pitching coaches went out to talk to the pitchers, it was pointless to talk, because even if they screamed at the top of their lungs, they couldn't be heard over the deafening noise the fans were making.

In 1987, the Twins took advantage of a weak division, clinching early in the division and ALCS while the Tigers and Cardinals went to the wire, and a favorable postseason home field rotation to win it all. In 1988, though a much better team, they were suddenly in the AL's best division and out of the postseason. In 1991, they took advantage of the rotating PS schedule again, but this time, they won baseball's best division, and even if home field was determined by record, they would have still had home field in the PS.

The final game of this World Series was soon followed by a home-and-home between the Minnesota North Stars and St. Louis Blues in the NHL. Although these games were scheduled while the MLB regular season was still playing, the timing of them probably meant there was more nastiness in them than other games between the teams in those days - and they were usually pretty nasty to begin with, this was the Norris Division after all. We see this today in games between the Blues and Wild.

- The '87 Twins posted both the BEST home record in the majors( 56W 25L )& the WORST road record( 29W 52L ); as fate would have it, the American League had homefield advantage in 1987. Had it been the other way around, the Cardinals likely would've taken Game 7 if it were played at Busch Stadium.....

Thomas Crammer I was 8, so you're right, I didn't. The fact remains that there is no such thing as "home field advantage". It's just a fact. Whether or not a team plays well at home or not is entirely dependent on the players involvement, not the fans.

i'm so glad mlb has gone to replay review. at least 4 calls missed in this game. don baylor at home, the jim lindeman catch that was fair, joe magrane's slide tag at first, tommy herr getting back to first safely. and after what cardinal fans went thru in game 6 in 1985...? great game 7, this is over 30 years ago, so if you're not a cardinals or twins fan who goes back this far you don't know who won, hell, i watched this game and don't remember much about it. maybe not put up the celebration picture and let people enjoy the game without knowing the outcome?

A couple of notes about this game. This was the 20th World Series Game 7 since 1952, and the third time during that period that there was a Game 7 in at least three consecutive World Series (1955-'58, the only time four consecutive World Series went all the way, 1971-'73, and 1985-'87). And that happens to be a reason why another milestone was reached with this game, as this game, Game 7 of the 1987 World Series, was the 500th World Series game played, which included three ties (1907 WS Game 1, 1912 WS Game 2, and 1922 WS Game 2) and four Game 8s (1903, 1912, 1919, and 1921).

Which was something that went all the way back to 1952, in terms of the frequency of World Series going the limit. In fact, this was the 20th World Series Game 7 since 1952, a span of 36 years. In fact, it wasn't unusual for three successive World Series to go the limit, and four straight went the limit from 1955-'58, with the visiting team winning all four Game 7s.

@@travismcdonald6576 Just in the 1980s. In fact, the St. Louis Cardinals have probably played in more 7-game World Series than any other franchise, except possibly the New York Yankees (and I'm not even sure about that). And they have won more 7-game World Series than any other franchise, taking a record 8 World Series that have gone the distance, including two each against the Yankees and Red Sox.

During the 11 years between 1982-1992, this was the only World Series to match two cities which shared a division in the NHL (during this time the NHL conducted a division-based playoff format and regular-season schedule). Fortuitously, the NHL division that Minnesota and St. Louis were a part of was the Norris Division - which had THE most intense rivalries of all. And a few days after the World Series ended in 1987, the Blues and North Stars played a home-and-home which probably had a lot of hard feelings from the World Series. My guess was that these two games in particular were very physical.
