Jiang was very very strong mentally here, the Waldner he beat here was a monster to meet. He crushed the players to the final and dominated until in the middle of the second set, Waldner won an incredible duel to something like 9-3, then Jiang came back to win. Waldner did not loose many matches playing like he did here, so full respect to Jiang -for me this was his best performance.

I became a penholder in 1987 because of this JJ man.

Johnny, But poor Bruce was long gone before this match. Bruce Lee, similar to many celebrities, was abusive with drugs.

The whole Swedish team were ill due to diarrhea during the 1987 game in India. I just heard about this. Very impressive performance. Both of you!

It made Waldner loose many pounds and make him understand he had to be more fit and quick than before. It paid off :))

@@SuperHammaren I think it was his training that carried him throughout the competitions, not that he lost 10 pounds due to diarrhea.

@@benthekeeshond545 Of course! But in his memoirs he also wrote that the reduced weight made him quicker. Also I suspect that he played a bit more relaxed without pressure.

Waldner is my favorite player of all time, but it think the stubbornness his coach has talked about may be showing here. I think repeatedly serving long, especially in crucial points in the match, cost him the title here.

J.J. was the best, cuz he won from behind against the youngster. You serve long to penholders cuz the chinese are too good against short serves.

Because they convert to a larger and heavier ball. Slower with lower rpm. Easier to return and therefore longer rallies. The TT serves with less spin and this is how the inside-the-table backhand flip is possible. If we are playing with the 38mm ball, the backhand flip shot will be utterly useless.
