Part 18: The 1991 Project Shop Truck is getting closer to the 5.3 swap. The 5.3 I'm using is a DBW motor. This requires a little bit more work to install than a DBC motor. This is how I installed the TAC module and modified the gas pedal to work with the swap.
If you enjoy the content of our videos, please hit the "LIKE" button, it helps us to provide the right content you want to see!
Several key takeaways:
1) Not difficult, but does require some creativity to mount the pedal and TAC module. Your swap may be easier to do.
2) Be sure your new pedal position allows for full travel of the throttle without touching the floor.

Although this may not help you now. But a 6.5 OBS pedal will bolt in directly to the OBS gas pedal spot. Swap pin a and f on the plug at the pedal, trim a small notch in the plug. And the 6.5 pedal will bolt right up and plug right in.

If you don't want to do a electronic pedal modification use the 1995-2000 6.5 turbo diesel truck those model uses electronic pedal and bolt into any gas OBS truck. The wiring color is the same but the connector from the pedal is different. Just cut and solder the wire. My swap works great.

Thank you, great video, lots of information. I'm working in a few projects of my own, one is a 56 Apache. If you don't mind I have a question regarding the drive-by-wire, will the pedal sensor, module and throttle body work on their own and if so how? Thanks
@laurencevillegarage
@laurencevillegarage 2 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the donor vehicle....depending on the vehicle, it will have either drive by wire (DBW) or a drive by cable (DBC) throttle body. PCM programing is specific to this arrangement. The parts of the system, connections and programming are specific to that. So, if you have a DBC throttle body, you could not just delete the cable and connect a DBW system. The throttle body will dictate the direction you go. In short, if the throttle body is DBC, stay with that system and if it is electronic (DBW), then stay with that system....wiring harness, pcm, all parts, etc. The Pedal sensor, module and throttle body cannot work all alone. Must have correct wiring harness and pcm. Keep it simple, you will have enough little things to keep track of and make work without over complicating it. Good luck!

I had not thought of that, good idea!! However, you have to be very careful to re-pin exactly or you'll have new problems. I like the idea.

I still have a few projects left on the '91. That is one of them. With my truck having cc initially and the DBW having cc, it should not be too difficult...having said that, I have not done it yet. You can check out lt1swap.com, Brandon has a write up on cc that may help you for now. Thanks for asking.

why not remove the wires from the connector lol

If you are referring to the module wires, I left them on to show the interference with other components. If I had removed, I might have mounted it not taking into consideration the space the wiring plug takes.

What about tacking the nuts in place? Have you had issue with the longer pedal?
@laurencevillegarage
@laurencevillegarage 2 жыл бұрын
The project is not finished yet, currently working on the harness, so, it has not been driven yet. If you mean tacking the bolts in place on the bracket and inserting in the holes in the firewall, that's a good idea. If you meant something else, not sure what you mean. Thanks

Is your harness new? or did you modify the harness yourself. A couple of areas off the top of my head...remove your "constant" and "key on" power wires used to power up your harness. Then double and triple check the source you use to provide power to these two sources. If it still occurs, retrace your wires at relay/fuse box to see if you put a key on power wire in a constant power source. Good luck, let me know how it goes!

When you do a cable, you’ll see what I mean. Much easier. I had considered converting this one to cable. But, I’m trying to keep this within budget (that isn’t going to happen anyway). I would have to get another throttle body and cable…just more $ to make it easier. When this one is complete, I’ll have a much better idea for future projects. I’m seriously considering carburetor on the next one. Not cheap, but save on harness and tuning costs.
