1988 - Birmingham Superprix - Highlights of the Metro 6R4 Trophy race

Looks like Birmingham traffic any day of the week but less contact. The traffic Island at 1:55 still remains as it was back then, ie: concrete blocks normally arranged in a semi circle to make the "island" much larger for everyday traffic which could then be removed to leave the smaller island seen in the video on race day. This allowed the island to be a tighter hairpin corner for the race cars. The pitlane was and is Bristol Street Motors, the well known Ford dealership.

I was at the works when the last of the 200 6R4s was being parked up in a line with the rest. All neatly parked and all in white. One of those days when you wished you had taken a camera.

JJ Mac R! Remember them all parked up on Six Acre....... all went to one of the big dealers who fitted a bit of customer comfort and painted them wild colours for road use.....

Used to drive up to the Lickey Hills . They were in the pound half way up the hill on the left all in white 🇬🇧🏁🏁🏁

10:39 "I'm sure this TURBO engines can be quite temperamental..." What? I thought that only a few (rallycross) 6R4's used turbocompressors, what the hell is he talking about?

You are correct. Will Gollop’s 6R4 was twin-turbocharged. The commentator is incorrect.

Sadly it doesn't, I think it stopped after 1991 but I could be wrong!

Not at all, LoL. MG died a few years ago and the Metro is a model from the late 80s. To be honest, I am quite sure this series was made of customer and factory rallycars from the group B regulations. At the end of 1986 they were banned from rallying so a lot teams of all over Europe found themselves with completely useless cars. A lot were bought by rallycross teams and I guess MG decided to do this series

Diego Ruiz the Metro 6R4 was allowed to continue in British rallying for a few years. Gradually the rule makers reduced its power, but that glorious sound will live with me forever. Hearing Pond flat out in a forest, that V6 howling, was heaven. RIP Tony Pond, and RIP great rally cars.

What a horrendously boring race just watching cars drive one behind the other hardly surprising it didn't last very long.
