where I live in Australia there was a murder in 1968 - a young woman named Lucille Butterworth was picked up by a man as she waited for a bus. She was about 19. She has never been found but the police know who did it....a man who later went to prison for the murder of another woman. They know he killed Lucille, (he actually told another prisoner he did it) but because they haven’t found the body and because he won’t confess to the police they haven’t got the proof that they need for a conviction. The girls parents and her two older brothers and her boyfriend worked for years to try and get a conviction or at least some idea of where her body is but to no avail. Both her parents and one brother have since died without knowing the truth. The man will not be getting out of gaol because of the other murder he committed but he will not come clean and give them closure. The family have suffered greatly over the years and it is so sad.

I live in Bristol and remember this case so well. My girlfriend of the time used to go late night shopping in the weeks leading up to Christmas (late night opening pre-Christmas was a fairly new concept then) and there was a feeling that this could've happened to any of our partners. Also used to drink and socialise in Clifton Village at the time and knew Richard Banks' face as an occasional drinker in my local. In my opinion John Cannan was the British Ted Bundy (charming, good-looking, intelligent) and would've continued killing indefinitely had it not been for the bungled incident n Leamington Spa. What this documentary fails to cover in any detail is his prevous rape conviction for which he recieved 8 years. He walked into a shop where a young woman was working alone with her 4-year old son. Cannan locked the door and ordered them both at knifepoint into the back room. As he was preparaing to assault her, the shop doorbell rang and she told Cannan it was her mother, who'd arranged to meet for lunch. Cannan held the child at knifepoint and ordered her to bring her mother into the shop pretending everything was normal and then raped the woman in front of her mother and four-year old child before making his escape. For this he recieved eight years and served six! Very dangerous man indeed - textbook predatory psychopath.

@glamdolly302 жыл бұрын
You're right, but in the 1981 clothes shop rape, the victim's child was only 17 months old (and the victim was pregnant at the time). Also, John Cannan served only 5 years of his paltry 8 year sentence for that heinous rape - and surprise, surprise, raped and murdered soon after his release. He's also suspected of murdering Sandra McCourt in Bournemouth towards the end of his sentence when he was allowed out on day release. When will societies wake up and realise sex offenders cannot be rehabilitated and remain a danger to the vulnerable indefinitely? Rape is the most serious crime there is next to murder - and it can be a very short step from one crime to the other. Sentences for sexual offences should be far heavier - these men are incredibly dangerous, and the public must be protected from them! If John Cannan had got a proper prison sentence of at least 10 years for that terrible 1981 rape, Shirley Banks would be alive (murdered in 1987), and possibly Suzy Lamplugh too, who Cannan is suspected of killing soon after his release from jail in 1986. Incredibly, John Cannan comes up for parole in 2022. I cannot believe he will ever be released (though the release of sex killer Colin Pitchfork shows anything's possible). After his conviction for the kidnap and murder of a woman, Cannan should never get parole. In the US they have the right idea - life means life, and a murder conviction means the killer will die in jail.

What police should have put out was a request for information on anyone seen in a yellow mini driving towards Dead Woman's Ditch on the night she disappeared. My opinion is that she was taken straight there. Cannan needed her mini to get home and with no interior lights - an impossible task of wiping his fingerprints. If he was in Suzies car, he would have left prints. Did police find any prints on the steering wheel? As with so many sex offenders and murderers, it's about control and power more than anything. Cannan clearly had issues with needing to feel power and prestige, so constructed this bizarre persona whereby he could pretend he was a successful, sophisticated and intelligent businessman. His murdering and rape allowed him to feel power and control over his victims. So much of it is traced back to childhood - either being made to feel worthless, or being given a deep sense of self entitlement. Apparently his father was very abusive and aggressive and his mother was smothering. A similar pattern with a lot of other offenders, in one way or another.

Jeanette Cardinal I'm not too familiar with the facts. I do believe Police have been very reluctant to solve some of these connecting crimes. The evidence is everywhere. No appeals for fresh information on this crime and others.

Jeanette Cardinal Police have made a fatal mistake in keeping a lot from those at the top. They aren't having finances and pensions cut for no reason. It will get worse. They are proving they are not fit for purpose in so many ways.

Jeanette Cardinal The Police were scared. There are other connections around Gangland and I believe police officers didn't want these types knocking on their doors or setting fire to their homes .

Shirley Banks spoke to her boss on the phone the morning after she failed to go home, someone phoned for a taxi for a pickup from Cannan's flat, as he sent the driver away it seems it may have been Shirley Banks who rang. Two things there that make me wonder if she willingly went back to his place the night before. It also seems strange her husband although expecting her home that night and with pre-arranged plans with her, did not call the police until the next day and apparently didn't contact anyone else either, friends, family, only her boss but that must have been after 9am. Was he used to her staying out overnight and no phone call to inform him, that is odd to me. My theory is she went back to Cannan's flat for a bit of how's your father, next day she rings up work hungover and makes her excuses, phones a taxi and gives Cannan the brush off. He being possessive and insecure isn't happy and knocks her out after an argument and a bit of pushing and shoving. He then murders her, she may have threatened him with the police after she came to or he wasn't taking any chances, he might have done it in a rage after she indicated their night together was a one-off. The location of the murder, who knows.
@mercedesblack78283 жыл бұрын
If she made the call from Cannans flat it would show on his phone logs? Or police will know it was made. The fact they never used it as evidence suggests it was never made from his flat. Because she was not there? If police had a direct peice of proof, they wouldn't have spent ages trying to get him charged. I'm still dubious about the thumbprint police claim they found on a document. A tax disc maybe but to say it was found on a letter in his property if she was never in it is worrisome in terms of reliable evidence.
@RipperBravo3 жыл бұрын
Cannan had used a gun on Julia Holman and had used knives. He was probably standing next to her threatening to kill her if she said anything untoward. The fact that someone called a taxi probably meant that she had un-gagged herself and managed to call a taxi but in that case why didn’t she scream the place down ? Cannan had neighbours. Moreover, we know Cannan had handcuffs and rope so she was more likely tied up.
@mercedesblack78283 жыл бұрын
@@RipperBravo If a call was made to Shirley's workplace from Cannan's flat there would be evidence of that. It would have led police straight to him. We don't know for sure what Cannan had. I have seen documentaries which show a revolver type gun as his weapon yet I also seen a Crimewatch real CCTV video where somebody resembling Cannan was holding up a premise with a short type pistol handgun. Christopher Berry-Dee alleges Cannan asked a Mr Big (Bristol connections) to get him a gun. I learned of Karl (AKA Mr big in the early 1990s) he was connected to massage parlours too. (Mr big). Odd how nobody knows his surname . The media cannot be trusted. Look at the shyness over Wayne Lomas murder by Bristol post. Why aren't THE Guardian going mad?
