For anyone wondering, this is my Mark VII. I also have a 94' Town Car (the purple Signature Series used in the Regular Car Reviews video) and a 95' Mark VIII (base, not LSC). This Mark was originally bought by a civil engineer at McCafferty Ford in Mechanicsburg PA upon his retirement in 1988. He eventually donated it to a church charity, and I bought it from them for $1,000 with a bad transmission. I replaced the trans with one from an Econoline and fixed some other problems. If anyone has any questions about this car I'd be happy to answer them.

Since the AOD 4 speed transmission was shared by almost all RWD Ford products of the time it was no problem to put the trans in. In fact, I had to use one from either an Econoline, a Ford Truck or another Lincoln, as they had an inch-and-a-half longer tail-shaft housing than the ones in Ford and Mercury cars. It was recently rebuilt and never put into a vehicle since, so it was basically a rebuilt trans for $200.
@chris922827 жыл бұрын
Daniel McLean Cool car man...there's a 90' close to me in Craigslist for $2800. I know you mentioned that you had to fix the transmission...how many miles did it have when you did that and how many miles does it have now?
@packardcaribien7 жыл бұрын
Chris Johns It had like 101,000 miles on or so when I got it, and I only drive it on weekends and to car shows now so it's probably around 110k now. But the trans busted because the TV cable fitting came off with the original owner and the trans destroyed itself by shifting into all the wrong gears. That's a known issue with the AOD, not really anything to do with mileage, as long as that doesn't happen the trans is robust. No, what you need to worry about with these especially at high mileage are the electronics (lots of issues with grounding causing the stereo, auto dimming lights, wipers, and trip computer to wig out) and of course the air suspension. Are you planning to daily drive it?
@chris922827 жыл бұрын
The one I'm looking at currently has 183k but really appears to keep in really good shape. The paint is good, no oxidation and the interior is good with no rips in the interior. I do plan on driving it every other day...so I'd definitely need it to be reliable.

I bought a used 1991 LSC in 1998 and promptly added the following off-the-shelf enhancements. 1) Kenny Belle TS-1000 positive displacement supercharger at 7.5psi. 2) Sub-frame connectors and boxed rear suspension. 3) Performance stabilizer bars front and back. 4) Performance shocks. 5) Low profile performance tires. 6) Finally, a 2.73 axle with low stall speed torque converter (truck). The car would turn a 14.4 1/4 mile and, with only a bit of torque braking smoke the rear tires even with the truck rear end. At 130mph the engine was turning 3,000 rpm but hit the speed limiter. Easy 150mph. NOW AN UPDATE I put 190,000 miles on that car and decided to get another example. Found a very well preserved 1988 out of Chicago. Added the same supercharger (brand new), custom stabilizer bars and drilled and slotted disc brakes with custom brake pads. Better shocks as well. Never got around to sub-frame connectors or boxed rear suspension. It still has the turbine wheels with ordinary 135/60 tires. However, THIS one has TrickFlow heads! We figure it as just South of 400 hp. Car needs limited slip for drag racing. I plan on running it at Heavens Landing 'wannagofast' 1/2 mile speed only drag race this Spring. I have run the race twice already. First, my 1986 Ferrari 3.2 QV Mondial did 115 mph. Then my 2014 Caddy CTS VSport turned 135. The car is available to the right buyer. I already gave my 1965 red Corvair convertible to my nephew. Of my four remaining cars the Lincoln is likely to go next. The Ferrari? That would require a very interested party! [ejdavid at aol.com]

I'm angry now. Why aren't gyroscopic cupholders standard on every car made? The future is lost in the past, man.
@lsrx1016 жыл бұрын
Actually, those were about the worst feature of the car. Anything taller than a Coke can is too top heavy and they tilt, causing things to spill. They were also brittle and are very hard to find intact today. A 24 oz coffee or tall energy drink type can fits perfectly in the tray with the gyroscope removed. Great idea on paper...

Don't get too angry...they're almost always useless. If they're not too small, which is almost always the case, they just flip from side to side and never keep your drink level. In 6 years and 55k miles on my daily I have never had a drink stay straight up in the cup holders. Anyone in my car almost always just holds their own.

I had an 87 LSC. The air bladders went south in the rear suspension and the car would be a low rider until the computer pumped up the air bags. The digital dash was horrible. The car had more electrical problems than a Jag. Yet I really love the styling to this day. What a tank this LSC was.
@AutoMoments8 жыл бұрын
The front suspension began to slowly deflate while we were driving it, but the owner managed to limp it home safely. A $0.30 O-ring was all it needed to be fixed. Still, coil-spring conversion kits seem like a safer bet if you're going to use it as a daily driver. Thanks for watching!

I have owned a few fox bodies. I currently have a 90 LSC & a 92 SE. I hear the term tanks often(kids/non car enthusiests), but they're just unibodies. These are pigs of anything. Nimble compared to the panther platform. More comparable to a tank.

Did you have any family members (or even extended family members) who owned a Lincoln product or a Mark VII when you were subject to influence (fancy way to say "younger")? I am drawn to Early 80's Cadillacs (especially Fleetwood Broughams) and many Lincolns from the late 70's to present day. I truly think that it is because I had family that always had these cars when I was in my formative years. I can attach those cars to some very happy memories and I think that is why I keep coming back to them. I've tried BMW and it just doesn't do anything for me since I value comfort. Mercedes-Benz makes fine automobiles, but they have a very spartan appearance and they don't evoke any emotion from me. Audi makes a great looking car, but I feel like the German cars are part of someone else's history and given the pricing, it makes a worse case for itself. I do love Jaguars though. My wife has a 2011 Jaguar XJ Supercharged. This i can't explain because I hadn't been exposed to Jaguar automobiles when I was young (at least not that i can recall anyway). I'm also fixated on mid-late 1980's Oldsmobiles and Buicks from the same era. The reason? My parents largely drove Oldsmobile Cutlass Wagons and Buick Centuries from the mid to late 80's when I was a kid. Certain studies have indicated that we, as humans, tend to find what is "familiar" to be comforting.

There is inherently something special to 80s cars, they look so much more modern than 70s boxes but also retain style unlike 90s electronic jellybeans. The 80s were also the most diverse decade by far: The most music, fashion and car choices one could ever ask for, you wanted fuel injection? No problem, you want a carb? Also no problem. You could still have old-school luxury cars in the US or also go with exotic sports cars.

I had a brand new 5.0 Mustang LX in 1988, which I loved, and one night our old friend shows up in a brand new Mark VII LSC. The LSC was midnight blue with a matching interior and the same engine as my Stang. As he took us for a ride, I noticed how smooth and controlled the ride was. While it was much heavier than the Mustang, it was quieter and more dignified in it's power delivery and handling. To this day, I still wish to someday get a car like that. It made one Hell of an impression on me then and in the thirty years since.

Trivia note about this car: In 1987 I was a landscaper in Detroit in the summers between years in college. One of the properties that we cut happened to be owned by Jack Telnack, the designer of this car. I saw him in his driveway one day and I walked up to him and told him I liked his designs. A friend of mine had an '86 Cougar XR7 turbo, and I told him how enthused he was about the car. What he told me next nearly floored me: When they were originally doing concept drawings of the '83 Thunderbird, Mercury Cougar, and Lincoln Mk7, the Lincoln product was to have a very formal upright rear roofline, and the Cougar was to have a swooping design that was to bring memories of the original '68 Cougar with it's "flying buttress" rear roof line, but someone in upper management thought that the designs should be swapped. Frankly, though Telnack didn't say it, I suspect this came from Henry Ford II himself, because he was well known to be enthralled with the notion of the "Hot Rod Lincoln". Thus, the Lincoln Mk7 got its sweeping rear roof line, and the car that became the Mercury Cougar received a very upright rear window. To evoke memories of that first Cougar, the rear side windows of the Mercury were given an [awkward...] upward swoop towards the rear. And suddenly we have a performance version of the MK7 called the LSC.

I had a '89. I LOVED that car! I got it from a used lot. It was in pieces. One weekend Shorty's You Pull (The local junkyard) had a "Whatever you can drag you can get for $100" event. I got my friend and HS football Offensive Lineman teammate to strap himself to a TRAIN of car hoods FILLED with car goodies. (3 hoods to be exact) On my hood was a door, a transmission, 3 air ride struts, a front seat and other odds and ends. (Remember there were TWO more hood filled with stuff as well!) Assembled the car and my Uncle painted it gold with metallic gold flakes. I drove it for 4 years without one single problem. I felt like Mel Gibson in Mad Max when I opened it up on the highway. I sold it to an older Gentleman when my Son was born. 16 years later I STILL long for the purr of the 5.0HO engine. I loved my "Intercepter"!!!!

It's not the most inexpensive repair, _but it certainly isn't anywhere near your testicle smashing $1000/shock + labor number!_

I owned a 1985 LSC from 1986 to 1992. White with tan interior. That year, the name "Lincoln" was no where to be found on the car. It was a "Continental Mk VII LSC" harkening back to the early days when "Continental" was the luxury car brand from Ford. Loved that car! It was fun to chirp the tires when the light turned green surprising unsuspecting sports car drivers. From the first time I saw this car advertised on tv, I knew I had to own one. It was my "dream car". Over the years, Ford made improvements like more horsepower, analog instrumentation to replace the digital speedo and fuel gauge, etc. To my eye, it is still a good looking car-one of Ford's best designs ever.

This brings back the memories. In 1995, I bought a gently used 1988 Mark VII LSC, same color as the one in this video. Even in 1995, it was far more powerful than most other cars on the road, and it especially had a lot of low end power. The overhead temperature, compass, and "ICE" alert gave an airliner cockpit feel. When I sold the car, in 2002, most people that called about the car were teenagers! A lot of the issues people mention concerning these cars have to do with how well they were/are maintained. The Mk VII isn't a Mustang or LTD. It's a Lincoln. A technology flagship of its era. It is much more complex and has to be properly serviced. The same can be said for any luxury sport coupe or grand tourer. So often people just want to drive it and never fix or replace anything. For instance, the Mark VII owner's club will tell you that if an air bladder goes out, you buy a new one, just like a worn tire or used up brake pad. But when these cars are well maintained and working properly, they are quite a rewarding drive.

I traded in for a Thunderbird LX when the A/C went out and they wanted $2K to take out the whole dash to do repairs. I should have kept it. Nice review. I was in my early 30s in the early 90s and in the market for a slightly used luxo-sporty DD, and the Mark VII or LSC was on my radar in a serious enough way that I went to look at several pre-owned examples. Unfortunately, IMO the materials didn't seem to hold up well (switch gear, interior materials, etc) which, combined with some bad reviews (suspension, maybe?) scared me away from the M-7/LSC. I still think it's one of the most attractive cars of that era.

I continue to enjoy your work, which I regard as both entertaining and high quality/informative. I haven't told you this, because I withhold it till I saw numerous episodes, but the creator or writer has a consistently keen and correct sense about the presented vehicles, which are a (human) generation, or more away from us. In this instance for example the writer correctly grasped, that the Mark VII (somewhat limited) significance was, that it was a testbed for its volume leader big brother the Town car, which gone through a significant and important generational change in 1992, followed by a much more radical one in 1998, which must have felt like a one-two punch in the hitherto rather sedate domestic luxury vehicles' market.

My favorite Lincoln will always be the 1972-1976 Continental Mark IV. It is beautiful, it is big, actually huge, and it is plush. It feels like you're floating on air. I used to drive my former '75 model for 24 hours at the time and not get tired. It's only negative issue was poor gas mileage. But it weighed less than todays POS Lincoln Navigator, so it could probably be made to get better mileage with newer technology. I currently drive a 2006 Lincoln Town Car, it is not as comfortable as the Mark IV, and I don't like 4 doors. But it is the most comfortable late model car I could find. Comfortable cars are no longer made. I may just have to keep replacing parts and keep it on the road forever. It does get twice the gas mileage as the Mark IV.

My First Car was a 1990 Bill Blass Mark VII. White with Black Top. Never saw another one like it. Was a Fan ever since. I had the car from 1999 to 2001. To me the car was way ahead of its time. The Bill Blass was all digital, No analog gauges. Trip Computer, Auto Closing Trunk, Auto Antenna, Auto Leveling Air Suspension, Side Markers that lit up the left or right side of the car when you are signaling, The keyhole was backlit, and amazing JBL Factory stereo. SOOO Much Attention to Detail! It really Was a Mustang GT in a Lincoln Wrapper... I had to get rid of it, after all the car was 11 years old and being in school I couldn't maintain it. Cosmetically she was perfect. But mechanically parts were starting to fail. A few Years Later I bought a 97 Mark VIII LSC. Again I felt like there was Many features making the car ahead of its time. The HID Headlights and the Tail Light made it stand out. Also taking the engine from the Mustang Cobra was cool. I Did notice on this model, even though there was a more powerful engine it drove more like a sedan then a "Sports" Car, the way it shifted or down shifted. I felt the Mark VII was more of a "Sports" or "Muscle" Car. Also Analog Gauges were standard which to me was a downgrade and the Radio even though it was still JBL to me was not as good as the Mark VII. Now that I'm older I Went and Picked up a 92 Mark VII LSC Special Addition ALL Black. 119,000 Miles. Runs like a Champ. Still a Great Car. I have tried to reach out to Ford Numerous times. I want them to design and build a Mark IX. I know there was a concept years ago but nothing happened. They need to get back in the game. They don't need any more sedans or SUV's, or whatever the HELL the MKT is supposed to be. They need to build a Badass sports coupe built on the Current Mustang Platform, with nothing less then the current GT engine. Needs to Compete with BMW 4 / 6 Series, Mercedes C / E Class, Cadillac ATS, Etc.... I mean almost every Brand has a Luxury Sports Coupe around those Price Points. What does ford have? The Mustang and a Shit load of SUV's. I want ford to succeed. I want them to come out with a Mark IX that will have people lining up to buy. I know I would get one. When you think about the last updates they made to their only Sports Coupe was back in 97-98.. COME ON!!! Lincoln.

Another thing about this car it was suppose to be more directed to Bachelor/Bachelorette audience. As you said in the beginning of the video alot of them wanted the sportier cars like BMW,Mercedes etc. TownCars was popular for years. And the Continental was mostly driven by empty-nesters. I know the Mark VII did share some of its frame from the Thunderbird/Cogar. The Mark was always my favorite.

Hot Potato sedans are a tough sell in today’s market. Luxury coupes are an even worse proposition in the luxury market. Seems like most buyers want SUVs and CUVs.

I've always loved this Lincoln's, especially the LSC. I know it's kinda weird, but I've always appreciated the radius of the front and rear chrome bumpers right where it curves into the body side. Another great video Joe and another great car I hope to get into at some point! - Chris

I remember the Lincoln Mark VII. I was too young to drive at the time, but I remember finding it more attractive than most American luxury cars of the time, especially next to the *Town Car,* the *Mark VI* and *previous Continental*.

It's a sharp looking car, for sure. Thanks for watching!

I owned this very car an '88 LSC in the same color inside and out. I miss it incredibly; it was a car ahead of its time and terrific in every way except for perhaps being a bit chunky in the mid-section past the doors. It was relatively reliable and very good on gas for a powerful V8. Air suspension complaints are idiotic and even more idiotic is replacing the system with coil springs. The air suspension is one of the most simple systems on the car to work on. The brakes were worse but not bad if you know what to do. Just a great feel to driving it and out of the 7 cars I've owned including a Mark VIII and Cadillac Fleetwood, I think the '88 LSC was my favorite.

We're glad you like the car. As you saw, what looked like a big air suspension problem turned out to be a $0.30 o-ring! Haha. We certainly enjoyed driving it. Thanks for watching!

My dad bought a Mark 7 in the late 80's. It was a metallic Gold color and even though I was pretty young I remember it being a major departure from what we had owned in the past. My mom and dad had bought several Town Cars as well as my grandparents and I remember the front end no longer having the doors that would go up and down when the headlights were turned on. My dad started having problems with the airbag system. You could go out into the garage the next day and rear end would be almost on the ground because the airbags had lost all their air. I would say the one really weird thing is that the car had a BMW Turbo Diesel. I don't know if it came from the factory like that or it was changed later on. I think he bought the car second hand and it wasn't brand new so I guess it could have been installed at a later date. I remember that thing smoking like a chimney at a coal fired power plant. If someone made him upset on the road enough he would get revenge by getting in front of them and them stomping the accelerator creating a massive think black fog behind us and we'd start laughing about it. Once went on vacation to Orlando and drove all the way from Louisiana with me and my sister riding in the back seat when we were really young and I will tell you that trip was miserable. Not only was sitting in that cramped back seat bad enough my sister annoyed me the entire way there (16 hours of driving).

When the revival of performance occurred in the 80’s, I was 14 ( I consider the 1982 Mustang GT and Ford’s ‘The Boss Is Back ‘ advertising as the Gauntlet being thrown down). So, as I dreamed of owning each successive model year Mustang, I also found the LSC attractive, especially the ‘86 model filled with the HO 5.0 from the GT. I did get my Fox Body 5.0’s, ‘87 & ‘88. I haven’t owned one in 20 years and have been thinking about them again. But, I’m also having another fantasy- an 88 -92 LSC with coil overs and a gen 3 Coyote.

I had a '88 LSC. To this day still love it. Bought it with about 90k on it and it still had lots of power even past 275,000 miles. I can attest the faster you went the smother the ride. ;-) ... Except when the air suspension had issues. Then you could loose a kidney. ;-) Not mentioned is factory original headers and a crossover on the dual exhaust that equalized pressure and performance. But as time corroded connections all the awesome electronics, and it had lots, started having too many errors and I let her go.

I have a 90 LSC sitting in the driveway, with only 108,000 on the clock.. The color, Dark Midnight Metallic Red Pearl. Had a 92 Midnight Blue Super Charged LSC Special Edition when I was a younger man.. However the car was in accident and was destroyed.. That thing rode like a dream and hauled ass too...

I loved my Lincoln Mk VII. If my memory still works, I believe the non LSC model had 200 hp and the LSC had 225 hp because the LSC had duel exhausts. I kind of wish Lincoln would bring the fake tire trunk lid hump back to life. I also recall that Lincoln offered a BMW sourced diesel engine as an option.

The air suspensions on these used a microprocessor to keep them inflated and level, so the ride was amazing even though the failure rate was very high. Very very soft and smooth, yet still firm enough to perform. While all that stuff was still in its exploratory stage, 1988 was a good year for American luxury suspension systems. The Continental suspension systems, like I said, were terrific when they were working, but unreliable and EXPENSIVE to maintain. I loved the LSC's. It's hard to find any 80's luxury car in good condition these days.

I bought a new LSC in 1988. As I recall it had a feature that turned off your bright lights when an on coming car was within range and once it passed, the brights came back on. Why aren't auto manufacturers using that technology in vehicles today?

Many cars do have auto high beams today! But it's typically on more expensive luxury cars (just like it was back then.) It would be nice if ALL cars had it though. Thanks for watching!
