Best anchor leg ever. The first 2 legs were fine but the FloJo to Evelyn hand off was a mess. Thats what added to the drama, what made Evelyn's anchor so insane as she overcomes the struggles with the messy handoff and still hawks down those two in front of her. You can watch this many times and it makes your heart race.

Flo Jo handoff was " a mess"? I did not see that at all nor them being "behind" as the announcer said. It just did not come across like that, at all.
@websurfer10002 жыл бұрын
@@lesamccoy8373 Look at the first pass - from the starting leg to #2 that was perfection. Dont just focus on the hand off....the hand off + the position of the two runners at hand off + how quickly the next runner takes off. Leg 2 to flojo was also good/clean. Flojo to Evelyn - there was too much play in the hand off, wasnt clean, the spot she is holding is a bit odd as we can see the way the stick is being carried, Evelyn seemed to slow up to make sure she had the stick which made flojo almost bump into her (thats also part of the exchange)...it could have been FloJo came in too hot for Evelyn because they almost bumped into each other. the best pass of this relay was the leadoff to the second leg. That was perfection. chefs kiss....that is a coaches dream handoff. The next one to flojo was also good. there was no delay or playing around....hand goes out...boom...stick right in hand and secured with no delays next runner bursts away.. clean. Thats why if you see how Evelyn is holding the stick...not a clean spot... took too long to get the stick secured...wasted time which is why we were behind and which is what made the race one of the most exciting ever. For Evelyn to roar back and hawk those two runners down and win like that..... This relay is rated one of the most exciting of all time for a reason. Thats why relays are exciting. It takes a lot of things going right to win. So we had a messy handoff but still one of the best relays ever.

A statement from FloJo and her husband, Al Joyner: “I know exactly what people say about me,” he said. "And that's just not true." I don't need to use drugs. If they want, they can come for testing every week of the year. I have nothing to hide." Her husband says all the talk boils down to jealousy. He said his wife's astonishing gains are the result of being "trained as a man." He added: “We bought a $150 leg exerciser and he did leg rolls every night. Over 20 pounds every night to add strength to your legs. He worked 12 hours a day.” Only those who have nothing to hide say so. Do 12 hours of leg training a day for months and you'll set the world record.💪

I loved hearing the crowd cheer roar as Evelyn walked her down. That was a soothing moment for me. At that moment you could say, I'm proud to be an American.

I remember this race and Evelyn Ashford has always been my favorite... I used to run the 4x100 relay, I was the anchor also and seeing this just brings back good times... ALL of these ladies did their thing!!!!
@ronaldjackson75414 жыл бұрын
Yes they did because the young lady that started wasn't playing either...

Fantastic.. Evelyn Ashford ran the run of her life here. Same with Yohan Blake in 2012 4x100 relay in London. Their adrenaline rush was to the max.

It is so great to see this again. We were stationed in Japan then, and saw all the Olympic events live instead of tape delayed. Wow, my sisters, y’all did the damn thing.

This is how you hand off! Way back in the dark ages, our coach beat it into our heads, to not look back. You start your take off with your hand out! It is the responsibility of the person handing you the baton, to slap it into the receivers hand. You waste time turning around. He also told us to not switch hands. Whichever hand receives the baton, that’s what you run with. Track is still my favorite sport!

No doubt one of the greatest races in Olympic history. Evelyn Ashford was a household name. Girlfriend had to dig DEEP to win that race. Not to mention that they had so much class back then.

Oh my goodness...what an anchor run..BRAVO!!

Evelyn just runs flat out and gets to the line first. That's how u suppose to race. Not the damn technical stuff they do these days.... Lol.
@ranhill9 жыл бұрын
Mark Gable haha, she definitely runs flat out, but maintains her technique as well. Possibly the best 4x100 anchor leg of all time.
@markgable1019 жыл бұрын
ranhill No man don't you understand....?? She just runs as fast as she can.. That's it.
@ranhill9 жыл бұрын
Mark Gable EA was an elite, disciplined, great runner for many yrs, and to say she simply runs fast degrades all the work she put in to BE great. "Wasted motion equals wasted energy." In this race, she maintained her form, and even though running flat out, she didn't overstride, and was still relaxed through the finish. Speed will only take you so far, technique unlocks hidden potential and gets you over the top.
@alumbo9 жыл бұрын
Mark Gable NOBODY runs like that without painstaking attention to form. She worked her ass off for years to be that efficient and she deserves credit for that.
