Chet Atkins switched over to Gibson in 1980 for a couple of reasons: Firstly, because at that point, Gretsch, which had been bought out by Baldwin in 1967, was in near total disarray after Baldwin shut down the original Gretsch factory in New York and unsuccessfully tried to move it to Arkansas. Secondly, Chet had ideas for new things such as a solid body nylon string guitar, which Gretsch was never interested in, but Gibson was. Publicly, Chet stayed true to his endorsement deal with Gibson, but privately, Chet apparently told some friends that he was NOT terribly happy with Gibson, feeling that the instruments they made for him just weren’t the same as Gretsch. Nothing technically wrong with Gibson Chet Atkins models-but they just didn’t have the same sonic character.

Good points. Plus, Chet was a very loyal man. He said he wouldn’t leave Gretsch as long as Fred Gretsch, Jr., the Gretsch president who signed the endorsement deal with Chet in July 1954, was living. When Mr. Gretsch passed away in 1980, Chet then began his relationship with Gibson. Chet’s name was back on Gretsch guitars in 2007, six years after his passing, and remains so today.

Gorgeous playing. I love how each guitar seems to speak to you and informs what and how you play. Love your stuff Michael.

The “bent arm” vibrato handle was one of Chet’s inventions. It gave him more control and he could also wrap his pinky around it. They’re sold today as the Chet Atkins Bent Arm Vibrato Handle.

ALMOST sounds like an acoustic on the neck pickup. I don't know if it's the 14th fret neck joint compared to a ES-335 or what, but it sounds beautiful.

Cool sound! 89’ US? Does that mean my Fender 87’ US is also rare?? Cheers Michael the virtuoso Lemmo! Great chops! Like they say, it’s ninety percent, (if not more) the player then it is the guitar. Bless!❤❤
