Curtis was an 80s player if there ever was one. He won 17 times on tour with 16 of his wins taking place between 1980-89. Golfweek ranked him as the 3rd best golfer of the 80s.

Nobody who watched this U.S. Open would have ever believed that this victory, which marked the absolute pinnacle of Curtis Strange's career, would also be the final victory of any kind in Strange's career.

Not quite. He won a tournament in Australia in 1993 against a fairly decent field. But yes, amazing that he never again won on the PGA tour after this.

Especially considering that he was 34 and at the prime of his career in an era where experience and course management, rather than sheer physical ability was important to winning at the sport's highest level. But then again, the same thing could have been said about Tom Watson a few years earlier when, after winning his eighth major championship at the 1983 Open Championship and then having a good enough year to win the PGA Tour's Player of the Year in 1984 at the age of 35, that he would only win three more times on the PGA Tour after that.

Strange would encounter depression soon after this and acknowledged his depression not too long ago

I remember watching this live and a great performance from strange tight fairways and needing mid to long irons into most of the par 4s tbh I preferred seeing these guys tested to the limit
