It truly had more to do with the shift from Independence to conferences. Notre Dame lost the Miami (Big East) and Penn State (Big Ten) rivalries due to scheduling conflicts far more than politics/posturing. Those two things simply make for a better story....

@@matthewcarey3148 Powlus too! His injury in 1993 allowed McDougal to assume the starter role without much competition. No way ND competes for the 1993 title/beats Florida State with Powlus at QB. He held them back in 1995 and 1996 too. The 1995 team was especially loaded with talent but the offense/team lacked that extra gear. Powlus did nothing against Northwestern and Ohio State (0 TDs combined, sub 250 yards passing in both games) that year. Krug probably as well or better against Florida State in the Orange Bowl than Powlus would have. That 1995 should have battled with Florida, Florida State, Colorado, Kansas State etc. for the right to play Nebraska for the title.
@tuowl05642 ай бұрын
@@lorenzoyoung698 That was Powlus. Beano Cooke famously said that. He doubled down after his first game against Northwestern in 1994 iirc.
