And to think, this race stood for 12 years as the fastest 500-Mile AOWR race of all time. The 2002 CART California 500 race won by Jimmy Vasser demolished the record at almost 198 MPH

2 years in a row both Mears & Fittipaldi had problems & did not finish. This race was definitely the proving grounds for IndyCar chassis & engine duration, tougher race to win than the Indy 500, just ask Rick as he was only able to win it once in 11 attempts...

+UberAntisocialist Practically one of the safest open-wheeler 500 milers without a car wreck. 1990 was a very good year for both Indy and Michigan (Its two new average speed records) despite the loss of Pocono.

Rahal was just snakebitten that day. He pits first and Al Jr. puts him a lap down...then the yellow comes out. After a wild duel, suddenly Rahal is stuck a lap down. Too bad for Rahal they didn't have the "wave around."
