Nothing better than hearing a record that literally did not exist a week prior... Techno Trance House Drum 'N Bass Break Beats Hardcore Happy Hardcore These have all been digested into one term: E.D.M. From the late 90's til the turn of the century, the underground rave scene was an echo of the late 60's; a blissful subculture of acceptance and all-encompassing joy. For those who were fortunate enough to pass through the eye of this particular needle; what would you give to experience this one more time, sharing the moment with others who likely need it as badly as you do? Maybe we'll find ourselves in a world that's worthy of this experience again. Til then, my glow-sticks remain in storage with my records. 😢 Namaste...

I remember when RAVES where underground still. It was pretty dope. I could break dance and there was more of a mixture of Hip-Hop embedded with skaters, old school ravers, and hippy kids. Breaking was how I ended up at Raves to start with. I was into breaking from the 80s. I loved the DMC too. We could go to Raves and break. Most dance clubs would toss us out or we where way to young to get in. I liked techno... but I didn't really like the music played at clubs. There was a difference between the music mixed at dance clubs back then and Raves.. but the music being spun at Raves was something you couldn't just hear. You really had to seek it out... spent hours at a record store. In those days, you wouldn't hear techno on the radio or on TV..... You could only hear it in a warehouse at 2am. It was like our own World. Smaller parties where we knew each-other. And for awhile it was building up, it was freaking amazing. Police would come by and wonder what was happening. Strange music and people... we would just tell the cops that it was a birthday party or a company party, something along those lines and they would leave not understanding there was like 200-500 people inside a parking garage high as shit on LSD/Mushrooms/DMT/MDMA/2CB..... Sometimes the cops would ask to come in and we would tell them it was a private party, so they couldn't just come in. They tried a couple times to gain access. There was some clever people throwing party that knew how to handle them. And the cops would leave. But mostly they would just drive by and ask a few questions and be on their way. 92-97 was the era to have seen it... the first part of 98 was dope too... but.. It seemed almost like it happened overnight, there was suddenly a style to dress and a way to act... Then it because super trendy in 98, I remember getting a little pissed seeing a ford truck commercial with techno music.. there was an invasion of high school kids with tellitubi, candy, and meth... ya,,,, meth killed the vibe... it got weird..and wacked... Then came PLUR. Yup, meth and PLUR. Once PLUR came around it was completely over. Taken over and changed. The vibe we knew and loved was gone. It became more Corporate too. Like water was expensive and shit like that. Before all that it was better, with more of an underground urban edge.... we went because it was fun, we would see our friends, and we where pretty free.... We used to talk about how the 90s was a mix of the Roaring 20s and the 60s pushed through a technology filter..... We could do drugs and not worry about the police or getting some kind of poison... but around that time in 98, Hip-Hop had re-emerged strongly to the second golden era of Hip-Hop was well underway... and I was more focused on Hip-Hop. I just kind of stopped going as much. My buddy wanted to go to a Rave, so my friends and I took him, like maybe 1999 or 2000. We started our break circle and had at it... Trying to get the circle going was hard because people didn't want to let us break. Kept crowding us or walking through in the middle of power moves. We where approached by some dorks going on about PLUR. Our buddy that wanted to go ended up getting ripped off on some fake acid.. we ended up getting into an altercation in the parking lot that involved a serious fight to get his money back. That was pretty much it for me. We never needed some forced ideology like PLUR. It took away from the real Zen of what was happening. There is not much video footage of those early days. I pretty much would only go to a Rave after that if there was a Turntablist or Rapper that was going to be at a show. I can tell this video looks to be pretty much documenting those later years. Now they call it EDM lmao. I really missed them early days. Completely different from what it is these days. Time of my life back then. You wanna get a feeling for it, check out them old DJ Dan mixtapes when he is fucking scratching. Will sound dated for sure... but I remember. God I wish there was more footage of them early days. At least there is this which kind of shows some of the look. Peace. Shout out to Awak, Sbek, Tusk, Worm, Celtic, Drunk-John, Mitch-Dawg, Lacy, Chuck & Mike, Breaker Steve, Taz, Dreamer, Droppy, Bear, Kizzy, Stephanie aka Oops, Metro, Mech, and the rest of the kids from the crews ATE and MBK. And shout out to all them other kids I didn't name that helped make them early parties dope. 🐄🛸

Let me tell you younger kids - I'm in my 30's but just let me give you an idea - So, Friday nigh?t comes, right? You call your friends up, and they say "what will we do tonight"? - One of your friends say, "there's a rave next state over" - So you all meet up - Dial from a friends phone and the message says - "At 8pm call back, instructions will be given then" - So you all go and score some X, and some weed, grab smokes, gas up the car, and put together a CD for the ride, . maybe have a few beers or shots. Then, before you leave, you call - "The party will be at XXxxXX, and starts at 9:30 pm" - You get in the car, you start to drive, smoke some weed, and 30 minutes prior -pop that X - you show up in some town, lost..... A concerned black lady says to you " Where are you trying to go, kids, Gary Indiana is dangerous" - You say, the party! She leads you there, and you thank her! You are there! - This place is fkn Amazing! 8 or 10 stages with a different DJ jamming all types of awesome Hardcore, Techno, and Happy hardcore, Gabber, Chicago House - and it hits you - You are feeling it! You lose your friends, then you lose yourself - 5 hours later, you all come back together, magically - No cellphones, no GPS, no remembering where you parked, but it worked out, and at 5Am its time to go, and at 8am you are home- And it's only Saturday morning!
