I have to admit...seeing those big, heavy, slow (relatively speaking) Apache V's finish 1st and 2nd after all of the Cats break down and fail to finish the race does put a smile on my face. Not sure what it is but I have never liked Catamarans...especially in offshore racing. There is just something cool...maybe something traditional...about a V-hull racing in rough waters. Nowadays EVERYBODY in offshore racing runs Cats no matter what...V-hulls don't even exist in that world. I guess just like most people, I prefer the way it was when I was a kid...back when V-hulls were THE choice for offshore racing and NOBODY was running Cats.

Lucky Strike was a 47' Apache, not 45'. Apache made a 41' and a 47' and they were both rough water monsters.

18:55 What in the world is that cabin cruiser doing? Unlimited leaders split on either side as Popeyes big cat cuts across their wake. WOW, heartstopper! Can you imagine a race boat T-boning it doing 140? I guess they didn't have an established closed race lane, 'cause they run very close to other smaller private boats just after this.

Forget Bruce Jenner, Don Johnson's at 9:22! Melanie Griffith at 14:00 I'm guessing a very young Dakota Johnson is also there watching her father race.

Never been much of a fan of cats. Twin hull, air tunnel in between can put you in an IMMEDIATE compromising position. I like a boat that will not disappoint; regardless of water conditions, calm or rough. Love Apaches & Cigarettes; owned a Cigarette. Looking to buy another boat, in the near future; not sure which of the 2 it will be?,,,,,,,😎.

But the cats are soooooooo fast! 244mph in a 50ft boat is pretty awesome! Fountain is supposedly working on a 200mph V-hull. "Offshore" racing these days is more like "near shore" racing. They rarely get more than a mile offshore and rarely see waves over 2ft high so cats are always the fastest. They still hit 180mph during the races now though and that's pretty awesome.

@@csonkaperdido yeah they use turbines now..Al Copeland quad 50 footer like the one he's racing on this video was trapped at 150mph..that's incredible for the early 90s

@@hotdog8214 most of the turbine boats actually switched over to mercruiser racing engines - they came out with a quad turbo 1800hp V8 and it's cheaper than the helicopter motors apparently... But spirit of Qatar had turbines when it went 244 and those boats sounded awesome! I think the biggest problem was not the turbines breaking, it was the drives because they couldn't handle 3000hp. Still awesome though! I first got into offshore racing in the late 90s with the 40 ft skaters like Alcone and Drambuie On Ice... They had 1200-1500hp per engine and hit like 165 in kilo runs, and there was a v hull called Nemschoff that had twin diesels and crazy wings all over it - I assume it was a design by Fabio bertuzzi or whatever the Italian speedboat guy is called

@@hotdog8214 that's the good old days! Coolest boat I thought was the big thunder marine - unfortunately the driver and throttle man passed away in key west a few years back - blowover accident similar to the outer limits /lake of the Ozarks crash that killed both pilots.... Sad. But part of the game unfortunately. I was hooked immediately - my first race was the first race in st Pete in Tampa Bay, and I had vip tickets cuz my dad's company sponsored the races - and I watched a big cat flip over like 200 yards in front of me (pilots both OK) and as a kid that's all it took. When you see a 40ft boat flying thru the air at 100mph its pretty exciting lol
