Doing a fun "Junk Wax" era opening of 1990 Score. Searching specifically for BO #697 and the Frank Thomas rookie card. Really cool to flip through all 700+ cards and look for nice cards. Thanks for checking it out!

Me too!! This was fun and the boxes were terribly cheap. I even liked the design (still do). Thanks for watching 👍

Wow...no love for Bernie? I guess that you’re not a Yankee fan. He was a truly underrated star of the championship teams of the late 90’s and early 2000’s.

Great video. I recently broke the same set to get not the Bo, Thomas, Jeter, Chipper or Piazza rookies but the Randy Nosek Detroit Tigers rookie. Went to school with Randy and back in the day had his rookie from that set. Throughout the years I misplaced it and what better way to regain it than by reliving the entire set. Thanks for posting this.

Thanks so much. These breaks are so much fun. The sets could be had much cheaper and the old grading costs made it even more fun. Thanks for tuning in. Never had Nosek cross my mind. Cool you went to school with him. Cheers.

The cards from that set have a gritty feel to them, but it's from 1990 whats not to like!

No love for Felix Fermin? I too bought that 1990 Score Collector Set a few years ago. According to their own price guide, my near mint set would have been worth $30.00 in 1990, so factoring in inflation, I should be able to make quite a nice profit on this baby. While Score often gets lumped in as "another one of those junk wax era brands," there is something that they did better than any other brand at the time. While the design on the front of the cards can hardly be labeled "iconic," turn the base cards over and look at all the information written about each player. Early Upper Deck was famous for putting color pictures of the player on both sides of the card, but Score, which followed close behind, put more detailed information (beyond the stats) about each player. Of course, in their attempt to also include full lifetime stats, younger players got a lot more text than veterans, who probably deserved more. Nevertheless, in that pre-internet era, Score was a great brand for the baseball card collector who wanted to have more knowledge of the players, beyond the typical, "Joe likes fishing and archery during the offseason," that one might find on the back of Topps.

absolutely! I always liked Score, too. And especially this design. I will confess I still like "Joe likes fishing" on those vintage cards - like some of the 1960 Topps I have shown. Please don't spend all of those Collector Set profits in one place! 😂. Thanks for watching, Harris - love hearing the Junk Wax chat.

Thanks for sharing. My parents just went through their closet and found a bunch of sealed wax, including SEVEN of these boxes sealed. Debating whether to rip them to find and possibly grade some of the Bo Jacksons, or save for sometime in the future. I'm leaning toward the latter.
@GreenvilleGear
@GreenvilleGear 2 жыл бұрын
NICE! such a cool find. I was able to get these online at a much cheaper time. The rip or save debate is a classic - maybe rip one or two and save the rest? With grading fees up it's a tough call and I think I got one PSA 10 back on the Bo but the rest were 9's. Good luck - and thanks for watching!

@@GreenvilleGear Sounds like a decent compromise. I may do that. Hopefully Score packed these cards well... nothing worse than getting dinged corners right out of the box.

@@arizonashane absolutely. That’s the way I handle sealed stuff. Save some and open some for fun. And I had good luck on those sets and condition / corners, surprisingly. They came out fresh I thought.

I love buying sets from 87-91 ... id rather have those than anything else. collecting cards from the 40s 50s 60s 70s makes no sense to me when I have no idea who any of the players are. never seen em play. never watched em play. didnt grow up to them. then this new era stuff is just garbage IMO. these weirdos paying 500-2000 for Zion whoever and these new weirdoes really makes no sense. none of these new era people will ever have legend status like a bonds, McGwire, Ripken, Clemens, Griffey etc. etc. .... these boxes are great you can get these for like 10 bucks total literally and pull out 30 great cards. tons of great base cards in this set of super star legends, plus the awesome frank draft card, the bo card, Sammy Sosa rookie and couple other rookies.

always wondered why if they put 1990 ROOKIE on so many cards in this set why they didnt put it on the Sosa card? never made any sense to me
