Thanks so much Kev! I never thought I would be able to watch this match! I have always been wanting to watch this, coz I remember Steffi was struggling throughout her 7 matches in Australia and suddenly she beat Arantxa so easily a week later! Really appreciate your posting all these rare matches :)

OMG! Steffi Graf is so deadly on fast indoor surfaces. Her forehand and serve was on fire 🔥 in this match. You can see how powerful and accurate her forehand was even with the old Dunlop 200G. Imagine how much more powerful the greatest forehand would be in this era with all the racquet & string innovations. You can tell how supremely confidant Steffi was when she hit a topspin backhand and serve & volleyed. This match was reminiscent of the 1994 Australian Open final. I also never seen this match so I share the same sentiments... thank you Kevmcg!!! On a interesting note, does anyone know when Steffi stopped holding a tennis ball while playing? Not sure if it was when she hired Heinz Gunthhardt or right before. It just blows my mind away that she used to serve with two tennis balls and then play while holding one. I think she was the only tennis pro who did that.
@mcgoran1004 жыл бұрын
YT Angel Steffi was amazing in this match! I think she stopped holding the spare ball for the second serve at the end of 1990. She definitely only held one in 1991.
@zuichiang50884 жыл бұрын
She was on fire indeed! Her serve and forehand - wow! Like you said, I cant imagine what it would be like if she were to play using the current technology!!! It would be so devastating. As for holding the second ball, I think she stopped doing that some time after US Open 1990? Definitely when Pavel Slozil was still her coach.

Only Navratilova could challenge Steffi in indoor fast court.
@ytangel72634 жыл бұрын
@@bondakaucantik5256 I agree and I would add Serena as well. Indoor surfaces elevated their games and their iconic weapons/tactics... Steffi’s forehand, Serena’s serve and Martina’s serve & volley.

Steffi was awesome in this match, no errors, and winners from all over the place ! She was unbeatable ! Odd to think that after this match, problems would start creeping in : broken thumb at skiing, then love affairs of her dad, emergence of Monica. And her huge confidence would be blown off juste like that !

Thanks so much for sharing!!! I don’t recall ever seeing Steffi with so much tape on both of her ankles, it clearly didn’t affect her game though, such a big difference with Australia where she really struggled with her game

I think generally speaking, the faster the court, the more Steffi liked it. Definitely a million times better than her performance in Australia.

Love how reserved and quite the Japanese spectators are compared to other countries. Where sometimes it's ok but at other times obnoxious even rude. I just feel its a nice change felt a little bad for Arantxa. Steffis serves extremely well placed hard and deep. That first set went by quickly i felt she had a couple of minor chances in the second set. But as my girl Steffi often did she played break points well. Boy that surface was fast it was insane to see an exhausted Arantxa trying to get to some of those shots. But all credit to Graf her serve and forehand were on fire. Very few unforced errors Aloha from Hawaii 🌺🌺🌺

Steffi who serves at 172 km / h at 40.50'. And 2 others at 175 and 177. We are in 1990! a topspin backhand at 36. Very effective. If she could have felt that shot as well as her sliced backhand, she would have won more matches. Many classic forehand attack patterns between 41 and 46. Magnificent! Power, speed.

Such a difference here in the way Steffi played compared to her form at the Australian open in 1990. By her own admission, Steffi played badly in Australia but here she's really loving the speed of the court.

best performance ever seen in my opinion from Graf, now womens tennis is bland and pointless, cant believe the power from Graf, 34 years ago, with todays rackets no one in history would have a chance.

Awesome display by Steffi at her best. Too bad the thumb injury and the scandal of her father brought her game down and suddenly she was defeatable again...

Wilco Scholman yeah the peter graf scandal really messed her head up. But at the end it made her stronger later on. Peter went to jail and she was winning eveything ... Steffi’s comment about sanchez being a clay court specialist tho 👀. I see u steffi
@gk8914 жыл бұрын
@@fuckurbody I think it's fair to say though that at that time in Sanchez Vicario's career, she kind of was a claycourt specialist. She improved dramatically though after 1990.
@zeddeka4 жыл бұрын
I think burnout also took a lot out of her. Those few years she had 87-89 must have taken a huge amount out of her mentally and physically, and she wouldn't have been human if she hadn't become bored with it. She had achieved absolutely everything there was to achieve in tennis by the age of 19.
@gk8914 жыл бұрын
@@zeddeka For sure. When she took time off to heal from her thumb injury, I believe she said that she was surprised that she didn't miss playing. I think the game had gone somewhat stale for her because there were times in the early 90s that she looked indifferent.

Arantxa never beat Steffi indoors. The courts too fast to accommodate Arantxa's retrieving game.
