1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera Replacing Fuel Injectors

I replace the fuel injectors in my Cutlass with rebuilt Ford/Bosch units. 2 of the injectors had already been replaced, 2 more tested out of spec. Replaced them all for peace of mind and proper performance.
I am not a mechanic, I had never done this job on this engine before and did not know what to expect fully. I learned as I went in this video and hopefully it will help others.

Replaced mine yesterday on 1993 Cutlass Ciera. Found out you don't have to remove the fuel regulator. When you release the first bracket with the torx screw just push down on the metal line and it pops right out. Fuel regulator comes off with the fuel rail as a unit. Went back together no problem and no leak. Saves the hassle of removing the second torx screw which is in a really tough spot.

I had a similar issue with my 1990 cutlass supreme. After watching your video I went through my pile of spare early 90's vw parts. Low and behold the vw injectors looked identical to the ones in your video. I took a chance and bought new injector o-rings for $12. I had 8 vw digifant injectors so I only used 6 of them. The car runs like a champ now. Should be a bit more reliable with bosch/vw parts :)

how would you go about removing part of a screw to the throttle position sensor? 3300 same as yours. they don't give much space to work. its how I broke it. 8-32 machine screw. the back one.

I have the 1990 version. After having the battery off, it started and ran okay for a while. But then when it warmed up it started stalling when letting off the gas. You have to press the gas pedal to get it to start again. I'm suspecting the IAC valve. The coilpacks test okay.

I had a small misfire and just changed plugs to a/c platinum, bought 3 delphi coils and module then added Belden plug wires. with 105k it runs smooth as can be with lots of power lol.

I did this on my 94 3.1 liter Ciera as well as a complete tune up and coils and ignition control module and cam sensor only to find out I need to replace crank sensor and crankshaft position sensor When I get to those two sensors and replace them I'll let y'all know Meanwhile the sputtering and stalling and falling rpm gauge continue

I followed your steps and did all 6 injectors. My 3.3 liter '93 cutlass runs good but during driving now as I press the gas pedal there is a very slight hesitation and engine will shut off. I can restart and it runs fine immediately. But the slight hesitation after accelerating remains. any suggestions? Jack in Columbus Ohio

Coils are another common problem with these, pretty easily tested. Pop the spark plug wires off and measure resistance between the two towers on all 3. Make sure they're very close to one another. You could also have vacuum leaks and when you give it throttle, it's too much air and chokes the engine out. It could also be a fuel delivery issue, change the fuel filter and see if that helps. It also wouldn't hurt to clean the idle air control motor/valve right behind the throttle body as well as the throttle plate itself. Finally, disconnect the battery, wait a few minutes and reconnect it. It might be that your better performing parts are messing with the computer's compensated values for the poorer performing parts.

I have a Buick Century with the same engine there. Also had a pretty rough engine shaking. Fixed it with cleaning of the throttle body and Idle Air Control valve. After cleaning runs smooth. I also have a bit of a misfire, maybe needs to change the injectors too. A bit hard to do it since I'm from Europe, but will see. Anyways, I have a leak somewhere in the exhaust manifold, maybe the O2 sensor is not working properly because of that and the exhaust gases are not too good. Will fix it someday.

I did the same thing, a throttle body and IAC valve cleaning but unfortunately in my case that didn't fix the shaking/misfire. I think I even disconnected the battery so it would reset the parameters on the computer. Even after the new injectors, it still has idling issues. It seems a little better each time I do something because it's not near as bad as it was when I first got the car but I'm still missing something big. I'm curious about my O2 sensor as well but I hate to just replace it, I'd like to get a oscilloscope to see exactly what's going on. The only reason I threw injectors at the car is because the OEM ones are known to fail and were actually starting to fail as I said in the video. Good luck on your ride and thanks for watching.

You need to replace intake gasket. My '93 Century w/3.3L did same thing. After gasket change, smooth as silk.

I noticed you don't have a hose attached to the air intake filter box what ever. My tube/hose isn't attached to the air intake box either. It broke. Will that hurt my 1992 Cutlass Ciera 3.3??

As long as you have the filter in place, it won't hurt the engine. The downside of not having it there is that the engine is sucking in warmer air. That means less dense air and thus less oxygen, thus, less fuel is injected, thus less power out of the engine. How much exactly? Hard to say. I plan to get a replacement one at a junkyard.

Yeah that black brace over the valve is hard to take off. Looks like i have to take off the steering pump and possibly the alternator. Just need to double check with someone else.

Well if he can do it with one hand I should be able to do this with two. My 93 Cutluss wagon only has 205,000 miles on it. Want to keep it as long as the 77 Vista cruiser I had that went 430,000 miles.

I sold this car a while back but I think the fuel pump is in the tank. Might be an access hole underneath the rear seat or you might have to drop the tank.

I believe it is right behind the passenger headlight under the hood. There's a few relays there, I'm not sure which one is which.

Jim Roy it's gonna be right behind the passenger side headlight. There should be 3 relays total, and I can't exactly remember what wires go to it. Just changed a dead fuel pump in my '93 Century Wagon back in December.

I did, probably more than that. I turned the key twice in the video and a couple times when the camera wasn't recording. I'm not sure why the pump didn't prime. I'm not super familiar with the fuel pump in this vehicle but I'm thinking there's a key on timer that you have to wait 10 seconds after turning off the ignition before the pump will run again. Either way, no big deal, just a longer initial crank time.

Lotta things it could be. Does it restart after it dies? If not, check to see which you're missing; spark or fuel.

They are if you buy them new or re-manufactured from the auto parts store. However, there's plenty of businesses that pull injectors from junkyards or buy them in bulk, clean them, test them and group them. By the time they're done, the injectors are re-manufactured and guaranteed working properly and flow-matched so it's a pretty good deal in my opinion. The only time I'd want to buy new is if I was rebuilding an engine or building up an engine into a performance style.

This is one of THE most horrible engines I have ever worked on. Try to change out the Thermostat on this engine. You talk about a Rube Goldberg nightmare. I think the person who designed this engine was a sadist. I honestly believe that.
