He was leaving after they drafted Mark McGwire’s brother. The owner made the pick not him. After it was made he told all the coaches to “coach like crazy because this will be our last year in Seattle”. He fully expected all of them to be on his staff at his next job but the owner didn’t fire the defensive coaches. Just Knox and the offensive coaches were cut free.

The little things always seemed to break for the 49ers. If Eugene Robinson struggles after the INT for just two seconds more, the 49ers are out of timeouts on 3rd down and get the ball with 70 seconds or less to play. But instead, they got the extra two minute warning timeout, which gave them enough time to get down the field on their final drive. And then Rick Tuten absolutely shanks the punt.

you neglected to mention all of the breaks that went against the 49ers that year (Hail Mary in Atlanta being the biggest). If it weren't for that play they make the playoffs.

​​​@@jpete3027666 If I'm not mistaken, they lost both games to Atlanta right at the end. I remember they beat Detroit & crushed Chicago that year . Both of them were playoff teams. This was a strange season for SF. Another missed opportunity. I feel like we could have beaten Washington if everyone was healthy. But those Atlanta games ruined the season.
