1992/93 Australia v West Indies (Benson & Hedges World Series Cup ODI cricket)

A rain affected slog from the SCG from December 8, 1992. Aussies grafted 101/9 from their allotted 30 overs, with Dean Jones top scoring with 21. Carl Hooper and Curtly Ambrose each nabbed three wickets. The Windies were skittled for 87. Gus Logie top scored with 20, Reiffel claimed three wickets.

I was at this game as a 17 yr old. I love looking back on these old games, especially these low scoring games. They provided some real excitement by building tension, particularly during the chase.

Those days were the golden ones! We used to get up at 4-4.30 a.m. to watch test matches in Australia and NZ. The game was so even and 200-230 used to be a competitive score. The bats weren’t so bulky and sturdy and the pitches used to be bouncy. The batsmen dared not try a bad shot and venture to hit with gay abandon. Nowadays even Australian pitches (popularly) have been made batsman friendly and outfields small - just like India. 300 seems an ordinary and chaseable total.

Golden era of cricket 🏏. Even teams like Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 and associate nation like Kenya was competitive. Quality bowling and high class batting from all nations . Imagine the players like Lara, Tendulkar, inzamam , Flower brothers , Waugh brothers etc . Bowling Attacks consisting of Ambrose , Walsh , Waqar , Wasim , McDermott , McGrath , Warne , Muralithararn and even India had Srinath and Kumble . Players and teams were more mercurial . Lucky to spend childhood in the 90s . Even football and basketball 🏀 was entertaining too . Players were humble and no spoiled brats .

The series laid the foundation for a strong Aussie team that would dominate the world cricket for the next 2 decades. Having said that I think Randall gave 2 bad decisions and the Windies was at the receiving end of both of those decisions.

I miss when scoring four runs meant something. Hell, even a six meant something. Now, it's just... nothing really has that thrill. This is the same series in which Phil Simmons had bowling figures of 10 overs, 8 maidens, 3 runs, 4 wickets against Pakistan.

Today's cricket seems to be a lot more fun and entertainment as compared to these games. Can't imagine a world class side scoring just 65-70 runs from first 20 overs despite the field restrictions. I would always support the current way of playing the game over this one.

He wasn’t a bad player for like the period from 1992-95 . But I remember his dismissal in 1996 semi final and the whole 96 World Cup when he scored just almost 12 runs in 7 games . It was the most disastrous. Atherton always struggled against a quality spinner . He was usually Producing the goods by scoring 40-50 runs in a game until 96 World Cup . After World Cup 96 , he Was destined to be exited .
