@747Fan joebloggs one thing we have to remember about this race is that denny hulme, a really good mate of jimmy richards, passed away during the race and apparantly jim was told just before he went out onto the podium, and would of been very emotional and wouldnt of been thinking rationally

@@robpaton2981 great point. I have been watching as many old (full broadcast) Bathurst races as possible lately. I remember watching this race and was shocked that the race wasn't stopped when Denny crashed. Then to have everything else unfold during the race, made this a very memorable Bathurst. I felt for all the guys on the podium. I am a Ford fan and would have loved Dick Johnson to win. As he said, "I didn't know you could get beaten by a wrecked car." However the race was as dangerous as it has ever been when it was red flagged and with one death and 7 cars scattered around the track I would have called it myself knowing it would cost a Ford win. I'm happy they stopped when they did and the rules are clear and the results must be as they were on the last completed lap prior to the red flag. Jim Richards is a top bloke who deserved to have a proper podium speech and I don't blame him for calling them a pack of arseholes because they were acting like it. I was ashamed then and still now at the Bogan response to the results, it was embarrassing to be an Aussie and connected to that race.

@747Fan joebloggs didn't you see the track completely blocked where 5 cars crashed at the start of Conrod Straight? There was a car on its side in the sand trap at the Chase and at least one more crash up on the mountain, not to mention that Denny Hulme had died earlier that race. You can't call that premature. Drivers and officials as well as the spectators need to all come home at the end of the day. I would have loved Dick Johnson to have won but they did the right thing and rules are rules.

I met Jim Richards a few years back ...genuine, down to earth bloke. I mentioned the '92 Bathurst "pack of arseholes" comment and we had a giggle. I'd much prefer Group A or C over the current V8 Supercars format. Maybe im just old.
@thetwat1001

Id like to see a updated version of the old Group C or Group A rules, no 4WD and have some equality between the car where the engine type(Approx. power) brake & tire size and minimum weight and aero parts are balanced for each class like they do with the Balance of Performance in GT3 racing. i like seeing cars with different strengths and weaknesses in racing, makes it more interesting. at least bring in a small and medium car class, these days those classes would likely have diesel cars that might only need 1 or 2 fuel stops at Bathurst

Watching the full race, i dont understand the hate the crowd gave. The Nissan was leading literally the entire race. How did they not deserve the win? The rules stated that you backdated a lap. Rules are rules. You cant change the rules just because you dont agree with them this one time. That would make it even more unfair to the nissan team than it was to the ford team. Not to mention the absolute disgusting weather they were racing in. That crowd really was as Jim richards described them. While it may not have been very professional, I feel it was pretty justified.

It wasn't just that, the previous year the GTR's won had the same hostile crowd reception. Jim was right, Australian race fan's were disgraceful in light of a car that wasn't a Ford or Holden taking victories.

All things considered the Ford Sierra was still a pretty good race car, DJR were 650++hp though the rear wheels 2WD, 93 turbos were banned, Nissan, Sierras etc gone, all in were in a V8 Ford or Holden. I did not expect Larry Perkins cars to have Any problems, his cars are normally bullet proof!!!!

When a team manager starts hearing thunder and seeing lighting flashes like those seen on the film of the Crompton pit stop then there's no question on tyres if you've got experience under your belt, it's full wets. However, if you're down the field and you fancy a gamble then an experienced driver like Brock and some of the others mike take a rattle at intermediates. As history shows, though, you'd need to be bloody lucky to get through on those...

The rules were bullshit. A red flag should only see the order decided on the previous lap of the cars that were still racing. Dickie and Bowie came back in 1994 for a brilliant win.

Interesting that Larry is just driving an old VL in the Great Race of '92 - there had already been VN & the then current VP Commodore by that point & then the following year was up to date and won in a VP. All about funding I guess.

The crowd wanted Ford to win as it was seen being an Australian car although it wasn't as the Sierra was a British car. Who owned and still does) Ford? USA. Nissan was seen as an asian car and that shows how racist the crowd was. Australia should be isolated by all asian countries and see how they survive trading with their mother UK. Have their ships navigate outside Asian water and the long way. EU will trade among themselves without tariff and likewise USA-Mexico-Canada (USMCA as Trump proudly said it many times).
@kennyonline0519

I don't think racism had anything to do with it. There was a lot of politics within Group A and a lot of ruling didn't allow Australian cars to be competitive. I don't know the full details around this as it was before my time, but the Australian fans were sick of seeing rules written in ways that favoured certain cars.
@jamescortez504
@jamescortez504 4 жыл бұрын
@@kennyonline0519 The rules were written before the GTR entered the country so if they favor any cars then it couldn't have been the GTR. Jim Richards's comment summed it all.
@kennyonline0519
@kennyonline0519 4 жыл бұрын
@@jamescortez504 Understand that. I'm not saying they were written purposely to make Australian cars un-competitive, I'm saying that there were a lot of politics involved in Group A as a whole. There is a host of reasons Group A regulations stopped being used world wide, this being one of them.
@marksvideochannel3592

Kenny is right, it had almost ZERO to do with the origin country of the Nissan (other than not being Australian). It was because Fred Gibsons Nissan team were considered to have built a specialty car (with Nissan) at massive cost to beat the Group A top cars of the time (i.e considered cheating, unsportsmanlike etc.). The politics behind the scenes at the time were massive and the Larry Perkins Interview touched on it. They were given a last minute weight penalty that all the other teams felt was pointless. It was so big that it was a huge part of why Group A was ended. The manufacturers couldn't afford to keep upping the game and the Nissan was such a massive step it was the death knell. Though not the only reason. Sadly, the Nissan was just so quick it really made a mockery of the rules and the other competitors. The other point was that the race was declared after the big crash on the top of Conrod straight which involved the leader (Jim RIchards Nissan) and back dated a lap, so the people who were already upset with the Nissans felt the car didn't finish the race where as Dick Johnson did finish. Which REALLY upset the crowd. Not to mention the crowd is massively parochial anyway.

@@marksvideochannel3592 Great post. I remember watching this live as a kid. Was devastated when I saw they were back dating it a lap as a fan of Johnson/Bowe as I'd been cheering them all weekend. They drove the race of their lives in the hardest car to drive in those conditions yet still kept in the top 5 all day, most of the time in 2nd, even beating the other GTRs. The Skaife/Richards car had already hit the wall on its own and at the very least was going to be in the pits for a few laps if not out of the race completely, regardless of the pile up on Conrod. If the #17 drivers could keep the Sierra on the track they had no excuse in crashing the GTR. The Winfield team hedged their bets and brought their #2 car in for wets first which is why the first car was out on slicks. They made the wrong call. Sidenote. As a v8 fan I've always had a soft spot for both the R32 GTR and RS500 Sierras since this day. Both amazing machines for their eras. :)

Normally gentleman Jim, he was physically and emotionally spent and hitting the wall and thinking he’d lost the race for his team. This is party why I believe he lashed out at the drunken idiots in the crowed. It wasn’t Jim the crowd hated but those foreign Jap cars.
