There's a video on KZbin that recommends the crown Vic or Mercury grand Marquis for a first time driver or a student. They also talk about them being simple to repair and it's big size making it very comfortable and very safe because of its size. They said it's just not a grandpa car. I also remember it being used for taxi service and police packages

The best car I've never driven but endlessly told I should

I've always wanted to own one of these cars, just because they are so comfortable and famously reliable. Ford definitely lacked some imagination during this time. They could have used the powertrain from these full size sedans to power a midsize or slightly larger car, possibly based off the Thunderbird platform lightly stretched if need be to fit in four doors and a reasonable amount of space. I think something like that as the Lincoln Continental would be much more intriguing and competitive than the front wheel drive Taurus looking thing that they came out with in the 90s, especially if they got the interior quality right. At the very least, they could have made a nice Ford or Mercury out of it, but I think the wise choice would be not to water it down by offering it under all three brands, though I'm sure the bean counters would have a different idea.

We think that American car makers beginning with the malaise era onward simply became bogged down by too many bean counters rather than innovative engineers of the 50's and 60's, and the innovative Japanese went right past them. Today, Kia & Hyundai are doing the same. And, soon the Chinese will bury them finally.

😊 Great show ! My favorite full-sized cars I liked the Fords over the Chevrolet Caprice in styling and ride comfort . I in fact owned a 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis which lasted me over 15 years .

Another great review , I am more of a Chevy guy myself but the Ltd/Marques were some of the best riding cars i ever drove or been driven in. Only beat out by the previous gen LTD in my opinion. They have the 1995 Ltd review on here also, i think you should do a review on what they updated and changed compared to the 92's. And i would love to see you do a review on the 92' Caprice Impala and see who you think won the battle especially with the Caprice Impala getting car of the year in 91.

We loved your reaction video, Jon. It made us smile. A 90 mph limit on the speedo was a surprise for such a car with so much horsepower and torque. These were most often police cars in our locations. And, because of that endorsement were often family cars as well. And, they lasted for years. Americana of the 1990s. Never did we see a Buick or Caprice police car at this time. And we have no memory of a Japanese car used in law enforcement at this time. That bench seat was a big attraction for people whose second car was a pickup. (Jon, you used the term 'modern era' here. What is the modern era, to you? Is your definition the common definition today? We range in age from 80 to 72. Are we from an outdated age? We think of the 1900's to 1920's as outdated. But we think we are only about 20 to 25 years older than you. Is what is outdated today a shorter time span than in our era? We are analog not digital, true. But, we still live in the digital age. What then is the modern era and outdated? For example, the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Y are EV's, but the Leaf is outdated by range. Or pickups still have bench seats but it is an outdated feature in cars.) Please forgive the length of this comment but more than one wrote it for many.

The main reason I bought one of those massive v8 HEMI full size trucks was BECAUSE it was the MOST vehicle I could get for my $35,000 new right now.... I am firmly in that old school midwest American mindset of if I'm going to shell out the money I want the most vehicle possible. And it's a lot of money to me. Interesting....

@@raymond_sycamore Oth, I never buy my cars by the kilogram. My 720kg Alto RS cost me $24k USD to import used from Japan. MY 800kg Copen was only $18k in Australian pesos. Different outlooks, Cheers raymond.

@UncleJoeLITE 7 күн бұрын
@raymond_sycamore Ok, you said you buy your cars\trucks based on $ per kilo, I buy what I really like, cost per kilo isn't part of my thought process. Eg, I'd rather buy a top quality Japanese small car than a RAM 1500 for the same price. Hope this clears it up.

We understand you nostalgia for the 'most vehicle possible', but that is going away. I can recall our dad claiming he'd never give up his big pickup for a small Japanese car, but he eventually did because its better gas mileage meant he kept more of his money in his pants. He had to decide whether he was still going to be able to afford to keep driving or not. So most vehicle became not size or horsepower but most gas mileage as gas prices rose.

I owned two 2000's from almost new to the early 2020s. They were great car's to about the 16 year mark then it was non stop problems.Ford did an awful job at rust proofing the Panthers. I've owned an Old's 88, Buick Century & Coupe Deville none of them had frame rust problems and that was after year's of parking them in the coastal town I live in.
@robertallan4489

We found that it really didn't matter the maker or where you lived with respect to rust and deterioration. More importantly was how one cared for their body on frame pickups and equipment. We regularly sprayed and washed the undercarriage and bodies and parked them in a shed or garage in winter living in the snowy & salted roads of the midwest, and they would last as long as any on the coast if not longer. Being farmers we knew to take care of our equipment whether cars or tractors. People living in snowy cities don't know how to care for their cars and trucks. And, that makes all the difference. It's not the make or model.

@@robertallan4489 I had a 1980 coupe Deville it died in 2002 no frame rust. I had a 1985 Buick Century that made it to 2001 no frame rust. I had a 1989 Olds 88 that died in 2012 no frame rust. Both my 2000 Marquis had severe frame rust past the 12 year mark. I never washed the frames on the Gm car's. At 23 years old my Olds 88 had minor surface rust. Ford did a crap job rust proofing the Panthers plain and simple.

Are the Lincoln Town Cars of the 90s -00s based on this too? I've ridden in Crown Vics a few times as taxis, but more in Town Cars in Fils. Cheers Jon. 🇦🇺 🇵🇭

The comments on the presence that the Ford offerings have is something I’ve always noticed, especially with the Lincolns and Mercurys. Sure the 90s Caprices are also fairly meek and not very assertive, but the Roadmaster sedans and especially the last RWD Fleetwoods have very prominent front and rear styling. Those Caddys especially, they make so much more of a statement than the Town Car.

Where fuel was cheap, I would certainly have opted for one of these over something like a Honda Accord. In Britain, this is what we would think of as a proper American car. The column change means it can accommodate three in the front. Was this kind of large car, especially as a station wagon, any less practical than the pick ups and boring SUV's that people drive today?
@robertallan4489
@robertallan4489 4 күн бұрын
Yes. It is sad that the big station wagon is gone. They were a very practical car for our location, and could often double as a family car and hauler as well. But, were no match for a work pickup for hauling and working outdoors because except for the little AMC no station wagon was sold as a four wheel drive in our location. They were supplanted by the mini-van that Chrysler invented.
@obesetuna3164
@obesetuna3164 4 күн бұрын
@@robertallan4489 Well. The original Chrysler mini van was not such a bad idea. Here in Britain, we had our, mostly smaller, versions of estate cars - station wagons- and they were ideal as a family holdall. For the most part, it seems to be some kind of hybrid/EV SUV everything in this day and age. I might be too old, but the world of cars is in a sorry state.

Yes, but the wives of our times could carry the kids and groceries and be seen going to church in a proper family car instead of a beat up work truck. They liked that.
