Hi, very nicely and professionally done video~!~ I'm a 35 year Johnson/Evinrude tech. but I also had several mercury owners as customers as well. One customer was "Las Brezas Restaurant and Fish Camp" on the eastern end of Long Island, and I serviced 17 of those mercury 6/8/9.9/15 h.p. motors! Leaking lower units were common especially after 5, 6 years of use. My customers business was on the south shore of Long Island, a very saltyyyy environment! LOL! What you had to do on your leaking lower unit was actually a factory mistake. The mistake wasn't with anything in engineering, or part fatigue! It was simply a matter of painting the top mounting surfaces of that lower unit gear case!!! The factory painted the lower units before assembly onto the mid section of the outboard! They shouldn't have painted the surface area that the water pump ~plastic seal housing~ sits on. Because even if you use a gallon of sealer on the plastic seal housing, and the mating surface of the lower unit,,, NOTHING WILL STOP THE CORROSION ON THE BLACK PAINT, and the paint blisters and LIFTS UP separating from the aluminum, resulting in ................... !?!? WATER INTRUSION~!~ So I watched a portion of the video from around 10:00 to 11:30 and sure enough,,, the black paint around at least 2 of the bolts ((that hold down the plastic seal plate/housing)) shows the blistering of the black paint, and lifting that I'm talking about. corrosion, possibly the others as well!!! RTV sealant(s) aren't recommended for use on outboard motors generally, because of the slickness (that's deliberate!). Try using a palm sander/jitterbug sander to remove all the factory paint if you see water intrusion in the gear oil again!!! RTV SEALANT should be avoided!!! YOU USED!!! THE FACTORY MISTAKE OF PAINTING THE MATING SURFACE STILL LURKS UNDER THE WATER... CONSTANTLY SUBMERGED IN WATER.... HEED MY WARNING!!!!! I HAD A HEADS UP , BEING A SERVICE SHOP. BUT I REALLY LIKED BOTH VIDEOS!!!!! A 69 Y.O. SONNY!!!!🦆🐿🦫🦃🦉🦅

Another thing i want to ask is how can you take off the propeller shaft seal, the one you had hammered in to place, with out taking all out of the housing? Thanks!

Hey did you have to take it apart again because you put the keeper clip on the shift shaft on the wrong side of the water pump housing?

I picked my stuff up from a couple local marinas. One in London (Hully Gully) and the other in Port Stanley (Stan's Marina)...

10:11 Really enjoyed your 2 videos on this 9.9hp mercury. As a matter of interest how much did it cost for the parts and supplies you needed to do this repair work?

Thanks James, hmm, hard to say it was a little while ago now. But if I remember the waterpump kit was about $120 from a local Marina, and an assortment of the other seals would have been under $30, then a litre of marine oil and filler was also about $30 (but reusable) - so pretty sure under $200 CAD...

Do you happen to have the part number for that metal seal for the bearing carrier? Great video!

This is probably the best way to get the parts list for your make/model/HP/ of Mercury Outboard.. - Go Here and search for your serial number public-mercurymarine.sysonline.com/Default.aspx?sysname=NorthAmerica&company=Guest&NA_KEY=NA_KEY_VALUE&langIF=eng&langDB=eng - Select the correct link based on HP and ountry - Select either: - Gear Hsg Design I - Gear Hsg Design II
