This was my first show in Sacramento Sept 1992 …. Absolutely blown away. They couldn’t have found a better guy to join the band… 30 years later Viv still holding it down. Honoring what Steve laid down and contributing. Such a great and humble guy.

Like how they've always treated Viv with respect from the get go. If only Metallica could have done the same with Jason Newstead. But then again, DL always have been a decent bunch of blokes unlike Lars and James.

So horribly true! This brought lots of memories back of daily life as a teenager. MTV is a joke and has been for years. Saw Leppard twice on this tour. Awesome shows. Remember Joe at some point in the show coming out and talking about Steve. Very respectful.

libertynbeer amen to that at least Joe had the decency to talk about Steve and that he misses him but replacing him ? Come on ! It's not the same def Leppard I knew and loved no offense to Vivian he is a great guitar player but he isn't Steve
@bellroad1003 жыл бұрын
@@toriackley8402 , it’s not like they had a choice. Steve didn’t quit. He wasn’t fired. He died. They went back to the album they were making at the time of his death, and decided to finish it and release it as a foursome, out of respect and as a tribute to their fallen brother. After that, they knew they had to find another guitarist because that’s what Def Leppard is...dueling guitars that compliment one another. It wouldn’t be the same feel or the same band with only one. And besides, that is what Steve would have wanted them to do. He wouldn’t want them to try to be something they’re not just to avoid replacing him. And he wouldn’t have wanted them to quit. There will only be one Steve Clark, and the rest of the band, including Viv, would be the first ones to say that. But Viv is a perfect fit for them, and his addition has enabled this band to continue on and thrive all these years later. Steve will always be a part of that. And I know he is smiling that they are carrying on. 🇬🇧🎸❤️

Agreed. I have all the respect in the world for Campbell. He has is own place in rock history with that first Dio band. That combo had something special. But Steve Clarke had nearly ALL the DL mojo and took it with him when he passed. I greatly prefer the Clarke/Willis combo. That music was pretty raw and fierce in the early days, but overflowing with hooks and melody. Steve’s contribution to the DL sound just can’t be denied. They’ve never sounded the same since. Not harping on the band either. They sound better live now in 2023 than they have in a long, long time. They’re really killing it right now live. Wish they’d try to rock harder like the early days, at least for one album. Now would be a great time.

@peytonbrezski4 жыл бұрын
TalkToTheBody Of course I accept DL the way they are. I like Viv and I have nothing against him because he’s a great guitarist. I plan to see them next year. However Steve was a key component of Def Leppard in the 80s. Steve had a unique sound that separated him from a lot of other guys back then. Viv and Phil are more prototypical 80s rock/metal guitarists. What I’m saying is that majority of their songs in the 80s, both hits and less popular ones, had Steve Clark imbedded deep in their DNA. You couldn’t mistake DL for any other band as they had such a signature sound. Steve Clark was a huge part of that sound.
@peytonbrezski4 жыл бұрын
TalkToTheBody I prefer Vivian over phil also. I think Phil has done some good stuff in the studio but I’m not really a big fan of his feel. I think Viv is a better lead player and rhythm player as well. I personally don’t even listen to their newer stuff. I don’t see a problem with them playing all the songs from their prime. In reality that’s what most of the fans come to see and that’s pretty much how all the other 80s bands are nowadays. The ones that are still playing are just playing the same old songs from back in the day. Nothing wrong with that imo.

Total shame about MTV just giving up on proper music. I'm not a hip hop fan, and no offense to it - but how did the general population just give up on gifted, talented and well and long practiced musicianship for nothing but beats and rhymes? I literally don't understand how a flash in the pan style of music like hip hop became the main musical genre. It's a joke. MTV had the ability to steer millions of listeners toward music of substance - instead they just decided to blow it and promote horrible music, horrible values and horrible content. They had the power and they just blew it big time - I have no respect for that organization at all. I used to be stoked when 'Remedy' by the Black Crowes would come on. There's no remedy for this garbage now - ugh!!

Steve Clark was the least important member of Def Leppard. He was a rampaging alcoholic and only a passing guitarist. Phil Collen did almost all of the lead work. Don't believe that and you can check for yourself. It's an established fact. He was the lead and Clark was the rhythm. He had minimal influence or no influence at all on the songs written by the group. The only reason people make a big deal over him is due to the fact that he died. The reality is that it's a shame they didn't have Vivian Campbell all along. Quit basing the great band that Def Leppard was and still is based on a drunk, mediocre guitar player. If the band had to lose anyone then Steve Clark was definitely the weakest link in the chain. Get over it. Leppard is still a great band and is better off without an alcoholic anchor.

I can understand having an opinion and being right but do your research bro you have no idea what your saying? Steve Clark had everything to do with the Band including song writing up until he died. You have no clue...
@mikeystarr7754 жыл бұрын
You are wrong Steve Clark did not write many lyrics but he did write most of their best music he was a carryover from the 70s with his Les Paul he was more a kin to Jimmy page then he was a virtuoso. Phil It’s not a great guitarist he was never considered a top five or top 10 or top 30 guitarist but he did get better over the years but certainly not as good as Vivian Campbell is Vivian Campbell has the best of both worlds he has tone he has blues he can rip amazingly fast smooth taste for solos. You are right that Colin recorded most of the solos on most of their hit songs but that does not mean that he was a better guitarist than Steve Clark. They were trying to update their sound into the 80s at that point where everybody was just doing mindless blistering solos where as Steve’s solos were separate pieces of songs and separate pieces of music it was substance over finger gymnastics
