I miss Neil Bonnett as an announcer. The combination him, Buddy Baker, and Mike Joy and later Eli Gold and Dick Berggren just screamed TNN and the country and southern aspect that was NASCAR back then. Even though Neil wasn't around to announce too long, I felt that he was already one of the best and someone that I could of potentially looked forward to listening on TNN for years to come. Unfortunately, that never happened. R.I.P. Neil.

I was there! It was an amazing experience with the lights, the race, etc. No one knew what happened to Davey right away. I was low seating turn 2 exit, and all I saw at the end was sparks and flames. We stayed and watched the scoring tower to see who won. 25 years ago. Dang.....................

This was a who's who of the racing world from the 80s and 90s. Earnhardt, the Petty's, Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin, Bill Elliott, Bodine, Terry Labonte, Gant.. I know it's an all star race but my goodness, this is equivalent of the '92 Royal Rumble. Just proof how amazingly talented Davey was. Gone so soon. Tragedy in every sense of the word, and not even from a racing standpoint. Dude was a real treasure to a lot of folks.

This was when Kyle wiped out Davey after the race. Ford lost 2 of it's top race teams within 12 months of this race. I sure miss Davey and Alan.

Kyle had no intention of wiping Davey out and knocking him unconscious as a result. Davey just wouldn't give way (not that I blame him), and as a result, when Kyle and Davey came to the line at the end of segment 3 and Davey beat Kyle back to the stripe to win and Kyle spun him out, Davey went into the wall, and as I said, he was knocked unconscious and spent two days in the hospital. In case you're wondering, Davey would rebound and race the following weekend also at Charlotte in the Coca-Cola 600, BTW.

I believe that it absolutely did contribute to Dales demise. The way I understand it, is he basically ate the steering wheel when his harness failed. One might speculate that he may have still broken his neck, but the full face helmet certainly would not have hurt his chances of surviving the wreck. The official cause of death was ruled as "blunt force trauma to the face and neck". ... an absolute shame!

nope it wouldn't have saved him. why? because he hit the wheel so hard that his brain was smashed inside and the brain swelled and bleed by all the head holes. neck + brain = no chance at that speed. another thing to count is that, his car was going to spin on the left when marlin sent it back to the right towards the wall. not marlin's fault because Sr had already lost the control of the car at this point. i suspect him to have lean to the left (as he was going to spin to the left) and brutally came back on the right and hit the wall. which in my opinion accentuated the amplitude of motion. from stuck to the net to hit the wheel on the upper right spot. like a massive diagonal motion that broke the belt. we know the following event. therefore, i'd like to educate you about how stupid was Dale Sr. he did it to himself. he mounted the belt a certain way to be more comfortable. there's no such things as comfort in racing. only safety counts. this was Dale biggest mistake. even his driving style wasn't prone to kill him like his way to mount the belt did.

John Anderson Again, it all depends on the situation; DW was probably able to get his car going again, and for that reason, they didn't throw the yellow flag; if a driver is unable to get his/her car going again, then the caution flag will be thrown immediately, just like what happened with Dale Earnhardt at Texas in 1997 when he spun down towards the inside retaining wall in a crash on the first lap of the track's inaugural race, but couldn't get his car re-fired right away. For that reason, as I stated before, the caution was immediately thrown and stayed out for a while until Dale got his car going again.

Oh man the good old days were so much better.... wait, cars were inverted then took 8 laps to pass a slow car in clean air? No lead change till into the second segment, needed a gimmick like inverting the field to make it exciting or the 28 would have ran away with it? hmm yeah so much better than today. Actually the racing looks very similar to today, cars were hard to pass in both eras, not much has changed in that aspect. People are way too nostalgic. Don't get me wrong this is a classic, but the racing now a days is just as good if not even better.

Of course this era is better. First off there was twice as many aggressive drivers from this time compared to now. And two this is just before money involved in nascar sky rocketed to the stratosphere. When you could get a sponsor, build a race car out of your one bay shop, an stuff it with a race engine from a small time engine builder. Since around 96-97 if you didn’t have multi millions in resources, equipment and a spintron you couldn’t compete.
