1992 Toyota Pickup 22re Fuel Pump Replacement (Easy Way)

Replacing the fuel pump on my 1992 22re Toyota Pickup short bed. Process should be similar on other years, especially on EFI short beds. Replacement fuel pump and filter were $50 from Rock Auto, the total time spent was about an hour, and I was able to do the job by myself (moving the bed would be easier with another person). If your truck is rusty, I'd recommend spraying the bed bolts down with PB Blaster or something similar a few days before attempting the job.

Saw this one awhile back but put off the job entirely. Let me tell you it was so much easier this way. I actually used a come along and over the shed roof. I also pulled it up from the passenger side corner tie down and it worked out like a charm. I will say it helped that the tie down hooks were a little lateral than the cross member that I used which gave it just enough swing away from the pump

Thank you for this! My father had a 1992 Single cab 4x4 with a small lift & some chunky wheels. Around 2008 it needed a fuel pump & it being a pain to drop he bought a cheap beater ranger and this one became history. I can’t stand to watch it sit any longer. Now I know where to start and how to “easily” fix the initial problem before everything else that should be changed with its age & 15 years of sitting. It’s at about 105k miles and was well taken care of until then. Again, thanks for this!!

I wish I had just listen to you to begin with.. Just changed out the fuel pump and housing on my 93 22RE toyota pickup. It must have been changed out before because it was direct wired into the fuel housing, no connection plug, so wires ended up being short. Long story short I dropped the tank but when I went to put it back together I just didn't have enough room to connect the wiring. Ended up taking the bed bolts off in no time despite all the rust, popped it up and was able to get to everything easily. wish I had done this first, I thought this was was more trouble than it's worth, boy was I wrong. Anyway, my baby is back up and running, thanks again!

No problem, glad this video helped! Ive dropped tanks on a couple of trucks because I thought moving the bed would be too much of a pain. Thought I’d give moving the bed a shot for this project, and it turned out to be pretty easy!

What made you decide it was the fuel pump? My nephew has the same vehicle. Runs great at idle but starts running very rough (almost feels like a misfire but we think it’s fuel related). Shop said it it’s not a misfire but couldn’t tell us what it is.

Fuel pump was just a guess. I was running a bit rough overall. Fuel pump and fuel filter are both relatively cheap and easy to do, so I went there first. I also did the timing chain and injectors. That is a harder job, but necessary on the 22re engine every 100,000-150,000 miles or so. You can test fuel pressure at the cold start injector, but it isn't the simplest process. You'll need to figure out how to connect your pressure tester in line at the banjo fitting. Hope that helps.

You don't need to, but it's a good idea to have the battery disconnected before disconnecting any wires close to fuel.

I will be doing this job on my 1990 toy pickup... I hate looking up under cars.. My truck runs but no power uphills and got worse,, and from other videos, they say it a weak fuel pump..
