SPORT UTILITY CLASS HISTORY;
created by Mickey Thompson in 1985 with the designation ultrastock, the class name was changed to sport utility for the 1993 season to better reflect the type of vehicle competing in this popular category. also in 1993, the class has a sponsor, American racing wheels, which has posted 24,000 bonus prize money for selected events, with bigger and more diversified Fields anticipated throughout the season. Vince Tjelmeland who won the first ultra stop feature, a demonstration race at the Los Angeles county fairgrounds in 1985, driving a Pontiac fiero, and as the class became more and more popular with fans and competitors, the Pontiac and Volkswagen golfs and soon after the Volkswagen corrado, became the choice of cars for most, although Tim Lewis and David kreisler successfully fielded Porsches. in 1990, upon urging from manufacturers, the class was opened to sports utility vehicles such as the Jeep Cherokee, Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota 4Runner, and the number of participants grew considerably. this plastic body replicas of sport utility models were also a hit with fans who will have a much wider variety to see in competition in 1993, non sport utility vehicles such as Volkswagen corrado and the Porsche are allowed to compete in the 93 season but in 1994 the class will be restricted to sports utility models only.
