Some people might not realize, this is from a time when a LOT of musicians were saying stuff like this. It was right in the middle of the "alternative" explosion, and all these formerly underground or small-fanbase bands were suddenly rock stars, and everybody was obsessed with credibility. I remember similar sentiments about award shows being expressed by the Chili Peppers, Nirvana of course, Michael Stipe, probably U2 but I'm not sure... And, you know, they're right! Pitting artists or entertainers against each other in a contest with arbitrary or subjective criteria, judged by self-assigned people, is pretty undeniably weird. Some artists were more polite about it criticizing it than others, though; it was always nice to see an "It's nice to be recognized" disclaimer thrown in there.

You can tell the band is so subservient to Eddie, especially Jeff and Stone. I think they really feared showing happiness about success of their band when Eddie was around. At the first 20 second mark Jeff raises his hands in an expression of happiness for the band and then stops and turns to look at Eddie. He’s like oh no I made dad mad lol. I love PJ so much but I would be lying if I didn’t say there’s weird power dynamic to the band. I understand Jeff and Stone had lots of trauma from losing Andy and MLB, they just wanted to do whatever it took to make Eddie work out for the long run and for their own careers.

Yeah... I love their music, but Eddie can be quiet pretentious sometimes. I hate it when musicians act like being honored and recognized means nothing or that being popular is bad. They're trying to look cool and tough, but it just comes across as being ungrateful to their fans. BTW I'm saying 'they' because Eddie is not the only one like this. Kurt Cobain was the same way, as were others.

The embarrassment exhibited by the other members of the band and Kurt Loder is off the charts here, esp. when Eddie tries to be lighthearted and fumbles his way through a joke. When I saw this I was thinking he was the one who was in big trouble, not Kurt Cobain. The press were constantly talking about Cobain as if he were about to fall off a cliff but he put on a much better public face than Eddie did.

@@daniburns6369and I don't know that people now really think about how that music in the Pacific Northwest bore passionate hatred for the glamorous trappings of 80's Rock. All the pomp and fanfare, all the image conscious corporate handlers cultivating iconic personalities and such; grunge and punk wanted it burned. And then MTV wants to ask age old softball questions of stars that aren't interested in having their name plastered on a marque. We wore vintage and thrift store clothes because we didn't want to feed a corporation sweatshop money and we cut labels off of clothes because we didn't want to be identified and labeled... And that just created a new identity and new label. There is no escape. So, many that "made it" continued to hold both middle fingers up whenever they could.
