I'm still driving my '02. Improved in every significant way from the '92. Twice the power, ABS and stability control standard, bigger brakes (4-wheel discs) and bigger tires. VW is still selling the Transporter in Europe. They're now up to the T6 (Eurovan is the T4) and a T7 is coming out next year. VW doesn't sell it here because of the "Chicken Tax".

In Europe (especially eastern) those are considered to be extremely reliable, and cheap to own. You may ask how is this possible? Well, the truth is that about99% percent of them were sold with turbo diesels across the pond. Those were really great power trains, and thus there are may which have gone over a million miles and further.
@skylinefever

In addition, most of the vans sold in Europe had a manual transmission. Most of these vans sold in the USA had an automatic transmission. The automatic transmission was often unreliable and cost a fortune to rebuild. That transmission shared many parts with ones found in lighter vehicles. The Chrysler Town and Country van also had automatic transmission problems, but they were much less expensive to rebuild.

i live in the u.s and have a 1993 mv weekender with 278k miles, engine was rebuilt at about 180k but it still has the original 5 speed stick.i've only owned it for 2 years and most of the repairs i've done are deferred maintenance. i don't find the 2.5 liter to be under-powered but i don't live in the rockies. the torque is great and it will cruise all day at 70 mph with the ac on at 3500 rpm. the biggest problem is the cheap plastics on the interior are old and sticky in the summer. i've been trying to refurbish it with 303 protectant but it's a losing battle. also, the ride is harsh but that is probably because my suspension needs some work. i bought it for weekend camping and it definitely fulfills that mission wonderfully.

I had 3 of these Eurovans, all used, a 93 Westfalia, 03 Westfalia, and 02 MV (non-poptop). The 93 with inline 5 was slow but so functional. The VR6 completely changes things. John didn’t show here that these included snap-on curtains that went all the way around the rear windows. That table is an excellent desk or for eating. Also the side windows slide open, some include screens for camping to keep bugs out! Definitely not a cheesy minivan, these things are still like Swiss Army knives - especially as a pop top Westfalia! You can easily sleep 4 people, 2 down and 2 up. If we could only get the newer ones here!!

Shattered Dreams , I prefer a Eurovan over any mini van. Yes the early models were underpowered and even the early vr6 were too! Plus you had to put high test gas in the early vr6. But the 01 to 03 was quick for a 4000 lbs van and they do everything better than an older toyota van. More room, better safety, towing, cargo handling and options.

djkenny, yes that is true but all vans from 2000 to 2007 had transmission issues including Honda and Toyota. Vw transmission are so expensive because of the more heavy duty than most vans. My torque converter went out on my 03 Eurovan MV so the whole transmission needed replace but I had a awesome warranty so instead of $6800 it was $100.

Quite a bit faster than the Vanagons at least! I'd say the Euro 2.4 Diesel was better but it made a paltry 74hp/118tq, getting up to highway speed would have been concerning!
@skylinefever
@skylinefever 5 жыл бұрын
Although the USA did not get the 2.4D, Canada did. I can't imagine how dreadful it must have been to drive. However it certainly would be an improvement over the T3. The few T3 diesel models sold in the USA and Canada got a 1.5D or 1.6D and no turbo option. Diesel vans never sold as well as gasoline engines, so the best thing about the Eurovan/T4 replacing the Vanagon/T3 was that the WBX engine was eliminated.

@@skylinefever The crazy thing is this was an actual commercial VAN which had a payload of 800kg AND it was legal to pull a trailer with it too. I bet all that would have been interesting with 63 bhp and naff all torque (since it was a non-turbo diesel, which you're right were mostly pretty awful compared to the fast diesels that are everywhere now) on a hill junction! That clutch would take a PASTING!

This was very popular van in Europe. The smallest engine was 1.9 naturally aspirated diesel with 60hp. There was also 1.8 petrol with less than 70hp. Not joking. Many cars had 4wd.
@skylinefever
@skylinefever 5 жыл бұрын
I suspect that Europe got small engine versions because: 1. Fuel is more heavily taxed 2. Some countries tax vehicles on engine displacement. It is a major reason why many cars are different when sold in the USA versus what is sold outside the USA.
@jareknowak8712
@jareknowak8712 5 жыл бұрын
@@skylinefever 100% true. Fuel is expensive, one litre petrol or diesel is 1.25$ - 1.50$. Bigger engines = bigger insurance. In my country, if You want to import car with above 2.0L engine - You need to pay 18% of value in tax. At least 90% of cars on streets are below 2.0, many of them 1.0-1.4L.

If he had to push every button on certain 80s Cadillac models, the whole episode would be about pushing buttons. If he had to push all the buttons in a 1992 Pontiac Bonneville or fully equipped Gran Prix, the review would have to span multiple episodes.

@jason9022 Ok Mr. Elitist, calm down. He simply was curious if there was additional taxation on these vehicles causing them to be so expensive. He *was* trying to get better educated by asking a question. There's zero reason for you to be a dick.

Cargo vans are subject to chicken tax. Passenger vans no. I know Mercedes would mostly assemble the Sprinter van in Germany, ship it over here like 99% built and then send it to a factory in South Carolina to bolt a few parts on. Hence it was "built in the USA" and not subject to the chicken tax, which is something stupid like 20 or 30% of MSRP.
@skylinefever
@skylinefever 5 жыл бұрын
@@aaronbays4 Ford did the same thing with some versions of the "Transit Connect." They built most of the van in Turkey, then they installed the interior in the USA.
