I have rebuilt (fully apart, cleaned, new gaskets, jets) a number of carbs for several different motorcycles and have never had an issue. This is certainly in the realm of the backyard mechanic and I would recommend going for it.

Start with your float height that real imporant has to be dead nuts on. Then main jet. Then pilot needle height start #2-3 each time you do a step read your plugs take the carbs off much as 3- 4 times. Then you sync them. Spend the $ on good carb sync. Cheep ones can be really off. Don't mess with jet kits. You'll go backwards if you have a pipe single filters. Go up 5 stock 117 main I think. From the factory there set lean to pass emissions that's why the air screw has the plugs in them factory set. You can remove them. Air screw 2 1/4 to start then you read you pugs ajust accordingly. In more fuel out more air. remember the 2 inside cylinder's set them richer than the outside ones. There the ones that get hot.

@@brianjacobsen5762 i am on a standard airbox btw . those compression readings sound very low for your bike ... i thought about 130-150 was good for a healthy engine ?
