17:49 Fraulein forehand had a weak backhand ... when she was on she was unbeatable on both sides 😍

I thought her slice backhand was her biggest weapon. I remember Monica Seles once said that Steffi's slice backhand never got the credit it deserved in terms of how much of a weapon it was because it skidded through the court and stayed super-low.

If only Steffi use her top spin backhand as return shots. She used to use it quite often before 1990....wht happened afterwards?
@gk8915 жыл бұрын
She broke her thumb in a skiing accident in early 1990. When she came back from that injury, many noticed that she was hitting her backhand much closer to her body and it became a shorter motion. It went from a hard and vicious slice backhand with a ton of block on it into a short and choppy one. Two shots of hers started to disappear at around that time: her down the line slice backhand and her topspin backhand. It wasn't until 1995 that she finally amended that extension issue with her backhand and her down the line slice backhand came back. Her topspin backhand never really came though although she did save them for passing shots.

wow Graf was amazing in this match!! so tough fast and agressive. This is the Graf of the 80s. if she had played at this level in all her career matches she would've won much more grand slams. Sometimes when I watch some of her games I doubt that I was seeing another Graf playing because she lacked her athleticism, her graciousness and fitness in some of her matches. I don't know the reason, if it was due to psychological factor, or body injuries or just under the strain of overwork
@rathnakarb34167 жыл бұрын
ThePeaceful14 depends on the opponent you face. Monica at that time was out of action. Had she been there you would had find lacking in her athleticism and confidence

Illya Kuryakin I am a huge fan of steffi. But till date apart from steffi the 2 others inspired me the most are Seles and Justin Henin...one for her powerful groundstrokes and other for her lightning fast backhand. Both were trendsetters
@rathnakarb34166 жыл бұрын
Illya Kuryakin as I observed steffi she bogged down under pressure. Though she was talented she should have used her backhand to good effect. Her backhand slice was not effective against seles especially. She is far more talented than others. But she did not make use of her 100% talent . For eg. 3rd set of 1993 Aus open final against Seles. She played under pressure. Steffi should have intimidated Seles what she is capable of. But it didn't happen. Blessing in disguise the stabbing incident happened. The form in which seles was in it was hard for steffi to counter Seles. Watch the 1993 3rd set I mentioned. Look how poor she played
@rathnakarb34166 жыл бұрын
Illya Kuryakin steffi was far more superior to Seles no doubt. But she was never been 100% against her except 92 wimbledon. Had I been steffi's coach I d had fine tuned her. Because she is extremely talented. Unfortunately Seles kept on dominating her
@fidelandrews37966 жыл бұрын
Illya Kuryakin actually prior to Monica being stabbed it was a 6-4 lead in the series for Graf. Keep in mind that Graf won the first 3 meetings but Monica was making a big dent in their head to head. Also, keep in mind that Monica was just starting to improve all aspects of her game prior to being stabbed. It’s important to be intellectually honest when having a debate. I like both ladies but fair is fair.

It seems to me that this is the last match between Steffi and Martina. Steffi had lost to Martina one year before. Since 1992 Steffi had changed coach. Her game was more consistent but I believe that with all her efforts to play better tennis she was exhausted by the second half of 1994.

Steffi had severe back problems in the second half of 1994. At the end of the year her career hung in the balance, most people forget this.
