Funny for me to see a ‘94 still required to have an emissions test. The emissions program I work in gave up on the dynos in 2008, since pre OBDII cars made up such a small percentage left on the road here. Everything we test is OBDII plug in, sans heavy duty diesel, which gets an opacity test back to ‘84 model year. The state has an exemption cut point for OBDII cars at 15yrs old, as they figure the repair parts for emissions issues might be obsolete, and anyone driving a vehicle that old may have financial difficulties covering the repairs anyway.

1985 Pontiac Fiero 2M4 SE 5-speed, GM TBFI, "Iron Duke" Tech-4 Pontiac 2.5L engine: refuses to start from the starter, push-starts reliably. Great compression, good fuel and spark on cranking, but no start. Watching the 5V rail to the throttle position sensor, I found the 5V rail dropping below 3V as the starter hit compression strokes. I took apart the ECM (behind the glove box between the two seats), found a couple of bad capacitors with my ESR meter, replaced them. Worked perfectly after that; my theory is that the ECM was resetting every time the starter hit a compression stroke and the spark timing was way off during cranking. It was trying to start.... Electrolytics in cars have a bad life... Hot car in the sun, then start up and turn on the A/C, the ECM/ECU is usually in the dashboard and gets cooled by the A/C pretty quickly, then back to baking in the hot sun in a parking lot, then to the -30C weather we get here in Ottawa winters, then up to +70C in a hot car on a summer's day.... If you're restoring a car from the 1980s or later with any sort of EFI or feedback carburetor or original stereo, capacitors, capacitors, capacitors. :) Can you imagine how many cars a year must get scrapped due to weird driveability and emissions problems related to bad capacitors? Horrible waste because of a $2 part. I forget what brand of capacitors I found in the GM TBFI ECM, but the whole thing was built with good quality stuff as it must be - you don't want the car to stall out while merging onto a freeway or making a left turn. :) This wonderful tester I built nearly 20 years ago was what I used to confirm the bad capacitors in the car: kripton2035.free.fr/Resources/poptronix%20ESR%20Capacitor%20Tester.pdf

Since the ECU was unplugged from a power source you have to perform an idle relearn. The relearn is really simple: Turn off all accessories, start the car cold and let it warm all the way up in park. Once warm (over 180 degrees) put it in drive with the e-brake on and let it sit in drive for 10 minutes. It will automatically adjust the idle and be able to idle up properly for the AC and such. It won't do that before the relearn is completed. If any parameters are out of spec when doing the relearn it won't work. Specifically (and commonly) if the car can't reach operating temperature after an extended amount of time (from a stuck open thermostat) it will never perform the relearn. These old OBD1 Toyotas won't set a code for under temperature but it will still prevent it from doing a proper idle learn. This can really leave folks chasing their tails that aren't intimately familiar with these things...

I get in analog circuits capacitance affects frequency or timing, but in these digital circuits I would be shocked if they used a passive component subject to value drift over time to set some critical timing. In ECU's 99% of them use CPU clock dividers for important timings. How much delay could you expect from such a small cap. With closed loop operation it wouldn't matter much as the ECU would adjust duty cycle. Maybe a stepper motor would get driven at a higher or lower frequency, but again, probably not going to hurt anything. Use a wiring diagram and trace the output pins to figure out what system that cap affected.
@Mister_Brown3 жыл бұрын
the most likely case is the cap is an internal boost converter cap or on chip regulator for a derived voltage. people do definitely use caps for timing in ecus but never for critical things, still being off 2-3 orders of magnitude which is entirely possible with an 0805 chip capacitor might sufficiently break something

Did it ever idle up for AC? It that what it is supposed to to? Could there be a corroded connection or faulty valve?
@pradolover3 жыл бұрын
@@KameraShy No, not in my ownership (2019-onwards). It does idle up to warm up at cold and idles fine with load (in drive with brake on). It also very slightly idles up for power steering demand. Should say it does have almost 390,000km (255,000mi)
@MattExzy3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't worry too much. Any idle problems could be anything beyond the ECU. MAP. MAF. Idle speed control motor. Slight vacuum leak. I drive an '05 Camry approaching similar miles, it always takes a few minutes driving to not 'chug' at idle in 'D' while stopped. AC also puts the rad fans to high, so that's an extra load as well for the alternator which might drag things a bit along with the compressor itself.

@@MattExzy No worries thanks mate this is a longitudinal engine with a hydraulic fan clutch so that would explain it. Cheers!

You've just saved me a headach. We have a 1994 Camry with a cruise control that just started acting-up. Light comes on, then when you go to set the speed, the light flashes twice and shut off... for the day. I wonder if it is hinting for a bad cap? Will take your advise an look into it.... Love it! The only question I had at the end was if the ECUs are $24 and free shipping, wouldn't they likely also have issues? The car you were working on is 1994, but it only has 101,000 mi. according to the odo. Any other 1994 Camry is likely to have a lot more.

I buy a lot of used car parts and I do my best to find ebay auctions from the most suitable location for the parts. I buy alternators, power steering pumps, fenders from the south or west (TX or California). I buy AC compressors and electronic components from a cool dry climate (Oregon or Washington). And I buy interior parts from as far north as possible since they'll have the least sun / heat exposure. ...So an ECU from Washington would probably have at least a few more years before the caps leak.
@erikj.20663 жыл бұрын
Possibly, but presumably that cap spent its life baking in a hot car in So. Cal. If he gets an ECU from a more temperate part of the country, there may be less of a chance it’s caps have barfed all over the board. Even if the next one does have issues, it may become a blueprint, and parts donor to make one good working ECU.

Is it possible the computer has to relearn the engine, since the power was disconnected? When it relearns, it figures proper idle speed. It takes so many hrs running at different speeds.
@nathanlewis56823 жыл бұрын
I thought you only needed a few minutes of idle run for the ecu to relearn it.

@@nathanlewis5682 perhaps, can only relate to what a mechanic told me for my Mazda when he hooked up to the computer to do the state inspection, said there was no data in the system, I replied I just disconnected the battery to clean the terminals, (actually there was a check engine light up for a trans problem and I knew the car wouldn’t pass - that’s why). He said to drive it around different speeds for so long then bring it back. Thinking about it again, when I first restarted the car after reconnecting the battery, the engine idle was very low but it did come back up it did take a while though maybe it was minutes like 5 or so don’t recall.

@GrandsonofKong, Agreed! In any rational state a 28 year old vehicle WOULD be smog exempt.but the bi-annual smog checks and penalties are another big cash grab for the state. Originally there was rolling exemption in which any vehicle that was 30 years old automatically became smog exempt, but the governator signed A.B. 2683 into law ending the rolling exemption,and requiring 1976 and later vehicles to require smog testing for life. Why people havent lobbied since to change this is beyond me,especially since many 1980's cars are considered "classics" now. Imagine having to take a 1976 vehicle in every other year and pray it will pass just so you can get your tags renewed. its all part of our brave new world. "Ending is better than mending" We should all be in perpetual debt driving brand new,state approved,electric cars.

Put a scope on the mystery cap and see if it's a waveworm (timing) or a DC-voltage. If DC it's for decoupling an internal voltage reference.

Looked like the lambda was fairly happy. Do these have the immobiliser info in them like the modern ones? Most of the ecu’s we see are water ingress related to being located in the engine bay but the latest ones are triple layer pcb so repairing them is pretty hopeless, we just try and find a better donor one and clone it now

Naw 94 is super basic. I look at the new late teens on up and they look like they're designed to last about 10 years. Either the manufacturers don't want the cars to last more than 10 years or they know that the majority of humans aren't going to be around in 10 years or gasoline will be gone in 10 years something like that

@@shango066ah OK, bit like the early stuff we started seeing in the mid 90's here in the UK, super easy to bypass the immo back then, the more advanced stuff seem to come in with canbus. I'm with you on that one, I think it's the same all round with this 10 year EOL, cars, appliances even houses to an extent. We are at a stage here that we don't even repair engines on a lot of cars now, certainly on Ford with the small EcoBoost power unit, just buy another crate engine for less than a rebuild, not sure if it's the same practice in the US?
