Almost 30 years later as I watch this, knowing the outcome as I watched this live, I still have butterfly's for Jimmy. I remember being 14 watching this, and the agony of this loss was unbearable as I was convinced this was finally going to be his time. Oh, and did anyone actually watch Cry Freedom? I don't think I have even wanted an individual sportsperson to win as much as this night. Even in 2023, I still look up Jimmy in the qualifiers and dream might this his year. 2024, come on Jimmy.

@Billy Pribbo For me Hendry in his prime, was just as entertaining as Ronnie and a genius in his own right. Let's not forget that he revolutionized the game and brought it to another level and players like Higgins, o'Sullivan and Williams are indebted to him when it comes to the way they play the game. As all modern players are. Hendry was always looking for the pot, prefering a difficult long one over a safety. You can't always say that of Ronnie. Considering Hendry only started playing at 12 years old, I am not even sure Ronnie is the more naturally gifted of the two as he started playing at 6 or 7 years old...

watching it back again and seeing the missed black it was actually the 2 shots before where the trouble starts. he played a bad shot on the blue which left him short on his intended red which meant that he had to take the trickier one to the middle. although he would obviously have expected to get the black the last thing you want in that situation is to leave yourself that high on it and at that added distance to stun off the cushion for the red. Still as heartbreaking now after all this time

White potted a difficult red with the rest in the decider and then not a gimme blue with a difficult positional shot and then misses an easy black not doing much with the cue ball, he had it at his mercy, if he’d been playing anyone else he would very likely have got another chance but Hendry was at his peak with the winning momentum behind him, he’s the best player there’s ever been under pressure and that was ultimately the difference, it’s not fair to say White didn’t have any bottle though, he still won a lot of tournaments and you wouldn’t get to 17-17 with no bottle and at 5-1 down a lot of players would have buckled against Hendry and White came back but that missed black was inexplicable, it didn’t even get in the jaws of the pocket, he perhaps could have played the blue before that differently, ie played from the blue for the red into the corner pocket instead of the one to the middle as he did and he would have been closer to the black but that’s maybe hindsight, Hendry admits he thought he’d lost it when White was in but Hendry played a couple of great shots to the middle pockets and he was struggling to some extent with his broken arm, hence he missed a few shots with the rest.
