This game right here has to be one of the signature moments in Florida football. Everything looks bleak in the first half. Then both our offense and defense put on a clinic in the second half. Manning was supposed to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated following this game. Instead, Sir Danny Wuerffel took those honors and rightfully so lol. What an amazing performance.

Sports Illustrated followed Payton all week long in preparation for this game and sent a bunch of photographers on Saturday. Danny ended up on the cover that next week with the title, "Attack of the Gators - Danny Wuerffel and Florida Swamp Tennessee." Love it!

Not just warfel was magic. He really was a great college football. That team was so stacked especially on offense but our defense was good too. Anthony, Hilliard, Chris doering who I had the pleasure of coaching in high school. Fred Taylor, Jackson and a crazy good offensive line. If you notice every time warfel is in the pocket and pressure starts he can step up and that is due to that great offensive line. As the great Steve Spurrier said pitch-and-catch

I remember this game. I called this one the "The Tail of Two Cities". Knoxville at half time: "We totally got this, Final will be around 62-37". Knoxville after the game: "I can't believe we lost by 25". Gainesville: "Well, You did".

This reminds me of growing up in the 70s and 80s. My team (Ole Miss) was so bad we were never on tv. Radio was all you had. And great broadcasters like this had your brain working to visualize what was happening. Back then the SEC had the greatest.

It was live on ABC but Sunshine Network did a broadcast of the game which was shown on Sunday mornings. Sunshine had David Steele (former Voice of the Gators until he left for the Orlando Magic) and the color analyst was a former UF player in the 70s who played for the Miami Dolphins and I can't recall his name. The other audio heard was Mick Hubert on the Gator Radio Network. And at the very end, the guy interviewing Spurrier was Steve Babik, the radio sideline reporter. A few years later he was busted and sent to federal prison on a child pornography conviction. Babik was a Penn State graduate, for the record.

5:45 is the reason I loved playing defensive back instead of wide receiver. Its much better to be the dude doing the hitting than the dude getting drilled. Had this been played in more recent times, the game would have been suspended for the lightning strikes. So who knows how that would have affected things. All that said, it was one of the most fun games I've watched at the Swamp. I was in my junior year, had a seat in the northeast corner of the stadium, about 20 rows or so up. I must admit when it was 30-14 I was not confident in a comeback. But the Gator boys absolutely crushed Tennessee in the 2nd half. When it started raining that was some really serious rain. Everything on my person, right down to money in my wallet was soaked! I will never forget this one! And neither will Lawrence Wright or Joey Kent. 🤣

In short , the west coast offense cost Tennessee dearly in their reign of dominance. There o line was good , but you have to be dominant and pounding the ball short distances to make a run at a naty. Florida always has great athletes with speed. Nebraska showed them both what football IS ! The SEC will always be running game and defense. Great Quarterbacks are good. Just don't forget the basics.

Manning and Wuerffel came to the NFL with old school coaches Jim Mora and Mike DItka. I Manning made it more of a point to study and master the game on his own, because Mora used to really get on his ass. Wuerffel didn't have Spurrier anymore, and Mike DItka wasn't really about throwing the football so much.
