Most series between Australia and Pakistan are great examples of the fact that Mental strength in cricket is a bigger factor than talent. So many matches between the two teams can be recalled where Pakistanis could have won but they did not have the confidence to persist with the advantage in hand and Australia were able to turn the tables because they were mentally stronger side.

+Mansoor Ahmad Aussie wins were due to miserable wicket keepers of Pakistan like Moin and Kamran, not due to their mental toughness.

That, and Pakistan's ever unreliable batting.

You are right, after Pak's defeat in Hobart in 1999 from the brink of victory, Australia became invincible and their juggernaut started in which they crushed all opposition. Who knows how dominant would Australia have been had Langer been given out caught behind off Akram. Not to take anything away from his and Gilly's effort, but that decision single-handedly changed the outcome of an era. Next test in Perth would have been a different ball game, with Ponting under a lot of pressure after his string of failures, Shoaib at his peak and series square at one all. We will never know.

Mushtaq Ahmeds wrongun was pretty bloody special. I remember him being an exceptional bowler at this point in his career. He seemed to very quickly fade away which is a shame.
@techBuffy3 жыл бұрын
I thin it was the emergence of Saqlain plus his dipping form which contributed to his downfall. If he still was the first choice spinner, then maybe despite poor form, he would have continued and got the time to come back on top again

Mushtaq Ahmed was also a fixer. Thanks God his career faded.

His pace dropped ended up becoming a floaty bowler which is OK in county cricket but not at test level.

This was Australia's first test series after their triumph in the West Indies earlier that year where they dethroned them from the #1 world ranking. Also, I have fond memories of this series vs Pakistanm as I can proudly say it was the first I ever watched as a supporter of the great game of cricket as an 8 yr old. The highlight for me was that ball Warne bowled to Basit Ali off the last ball of the day at the SCG. Definitely one of Warne's top 10 deliveries throughout his career.

Hahaha was in my second year at university and we ran into both teams at a place called "some place else". Basfil ali. moin kahn and another player came out with us, got into every nightclub for free and drank free, avoided lines etc. I believe we dropped them off at thier accommodation around 3.30am! They had to play in a few hours!

Australia was superpower despite Akram and Waqar the wagah brothers were playing very good. Pakistan has Issues in bating , After the retirement of leagendery javaid Mindad no one was able to stay on the wicket and Pakistan keep loosing series despite the fact that team was am10 time more stronger than the team of imran Era but baiting was not there.

How can a team having Anwar, Sohail, Ijaz, Inzamam, Malik be considered weaker than one in 80s? Some of these players averaged in high 40s and Inzi nearly 50. They didnt score away from home was a separate matter

After 1996 World Cup, Pakistan became the best ODI side (with SA), by introducing 4 young match winners, Saqlain Mushtaq, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar and Abdul Razzaq.
