France is just now starting to open up to the world. But back then it was still a very self centric country and that commentator was... very French and full of casual racism. Quite awful to hear him refer to Liu as “the Chinese” :(

Enema He is, but he also has a name. Those commentators would usually mention a player by their name and not « the Spanish guy » or « the guy from Belgium ». More specifically they could do that a couple times, not every single time they mention it. I would wager they couldn’t be bothered to try and pronounce his name, which was very standard back then. The kind of words they used to describe him as well, they painted him as mischievous and cunning, which was a very common way of describing Chinese people back then.

@@bricecarpentier5817 - If you think about it you'll realise that it's actually quite common for French commentators to say "le Français" to designate the local hero. Even if he is a household name in a popular sport. - Gatien was at the peak of his career (World Champion and World Cup title holder) and that's pretty much the only reason they gave TT any air time at all. Most viewers would not have known or cared who young Liu was beyond being the current incarnation of the gold standard of TT, the invincible but nameless and faceless "Chinese player". - The commentators do say his name on several occasions.
