What a brilliant highlights package. Lara in his prime, Thorpe, Atherton, Hick and Russell batting superbly. Mike Watkinson and Dominic Cork glittering as all-rounders (Watkinson only played a couple more Tests and Cork was never the same player after an injury a year later.) Fraser was tidy as well and there was hope for Illingworth. The Windies had Campbell, Bishop, Ambrose and Walsh firing + Kenny Benjamin looked a top prospect and Chanders was destined for greatness. Both sides had a lot of positives to take from the series.

Cork had this great summer, followed by loads of games and a good series against SA, but summer 96 his firm dipped and he lost the ability to bowl fast outswingers. I hadn't thought he was injured at that point, just out of form and overbowled. He came back after that but was never the same world-class.

Thank yu.I remember back then for the first time in my childhood our huge Zenith brand television no longer worked at the end of June 1995,so I did not follow the series much .

@vindaisatossermini Excerpt from an interview he gave- "I resigned and retired because I was suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome, I was burnt out and it was a struggle to continue playing cricket. Every day was stressful, everybody wanted a piece of you and I had no time for myself. I was training harder and trying hard on the field but I couldn't do what I wanted to do. I felt like I was selling myself and my fans short. They wanted me to continue, but if I had have I would have got ill."

52:15 "Where are the (new) bowlers going to come from?" Tony Cozier with a very wise prophecy; how the WIndies would love Ambrose and Walsh to be 30 years younger...
The weather was scorching this summer it made the pitches flat and slow for the last couple of games, great series West Indies just starting to slide a bit, Lara was on fire and probably peak Atherton

Very hot summer but not as hot as the summer of 1990 in my opinion. That summer was hot from May to the end of September. Great memories!!

The Edgbaston test match was an example of the state of English cricket at the time. Like it was said, why wasn’t the wicket checked a couple of days before, so the right players could be selected?? Malcolm would have been perfect for that wicket. Like it’s been said before, we used to roll out the red carpet for visiting test sides whereas when we would go overseas we would have the complete opposite. We should have made it difficult for our opponents.
@adamw29114 жыл бұрын
Spot on. Even the stuffy old BBC commentators used to sound like they were rooting for the opposition.
@mrkipling22012 жыл бұрын
@@adamw2911 they did. Very annoying at times. In a way this was still a great time for test cricket. 5 match series against one team every summer and the same overseas in the winter. Not a 2 match series then a 3 match series against different opponents.

@robelinda To me richardson should not have come back. Far too often we forget that these players are also human and have mental and emotional weaknesses too. The highest level of any sport is demanding enough and can reduce the best of the lot look ordinary. That's why its considered a great leveler. It is best to remember richardson before 1992 as one of the best attacking batsman in the world especially his falling hook shot instead of looking at his decline after his son's demise.
@ajs414 жыл бұрын
Why did Richie Richardson seem so timid when batting in 1995 compared to 1991? I don't understand. I remember thinking about it at the time. Also he had started wearing a helmet in 1995 instead of his famous purple hat.

@vindaisatossermini I could be wrong about all of that though, i'll confirm. He was a different player in 1995 though, but he did score a magnificent 69 on a piece of shit pitch in that 1995 series, at Edgbaston, the 3 day test, to his credit he battled it out for 4 hours where hardly any other batsman could stay in at all.

@vindaisatossermini Started wearing it in 1994 after he came back from his lay off, I guess he wasnt the same player after the chronic fatigue. Didnt his son die in a car crash too, which compounded the fatigue syndrome. He missed the 1994 series vs England as a result.
