1995 Kobukan Dojo 20th Anniversary Aikido Demonstration, Sadateru Arikawa-sensei. Uke: Niall Matthews (British), Nariyasu Toyosaki (Japanese) and one other.
紘武館道場20周年記念合気道演武大会 有川定輝師範 (受け身:ナイアル・マシューズ, イギリス人, Nariyasu Toyosaki, 他)
(I understand that it was very rare for Arikawa-sensei to give public demonstrations, and that this was his first in many years - ed.)

I trained with Arikawa sensei at Hombu dojo from 1968 to 1970 and again from 1972 to 1977. He was very powerful. His techniques were not pretty but highly effective martially. He was rough but there wasn't any maliciousness or malice in his techniques. He was a very nice person and very knowledgeable about martial arts as well as history. Some of the things he does in this video is Daito ryu. Osensei thought enough of him to make him an uchi deshi and a shihan and that says a lot.

Arikawa Sensei was a very severe teacher on the mat and a very gentle person out of it. He had a very little following on Honbu precisely because people feared him. I was on one of his classes only once and it was quite an experience. It was not for everyone.

loved his class. broke the back window (cccrash, tinkle, tinkle, tinkle) with my foot when practicing with Nariyasu and Nial one night. He rolled to the back like a boulder, grabbed my foot, lifted it up to inspect it ... "daijoubu" (OK) and walked away. Incredible martial artist with an encyclopedic mind on the subject. (Now there are bars and safety glass on the back corner window 🙂).

I think critics of the late Arikawa Shihan should keep in mind that O'Sensei was a good judge of character and would not make him a Shihan if he didn't deserve it by not having a knowledge of "center" or contradicted its philosophy. Also, Arikawa was fiercely loyal to the Ueshiba Family and the Aikikai, and that deserves respect. I think so many Aikidoka confuse being "violent" with being martially effective. Much of what is passed off as Aikido in these times is aerobics based upon an attempt to turn misinterpreted aspects of O'Sensei's teaching on peace into a new 'hippie' religion. As a result, what many practice today is only a shadow of the martial art of O'Sensei, even though I understand everybody does not practice Aikido for the same reason. Let's remember what O'Sensei called his art "Takemuso Aiki" or "Martial Aiki. What Arikawa is doing on this clip is Aki-budo which is the transition art from Daito ryu to modern day Aikido which was deadly; and Aikido executed to its logical conclusion still has that dimension. Arikawa's Aikido has its own beauty, and should be appreciated for its own worth, although some modern Aikido practitioners may think different.

He's using Aikido throws but Daito Ryu pins. His execution of techniques is a little stiff for my taste, but to each his own.

Very nice. It reminds me two words I heard long time ago. Do not copy technique of your old teacher and your technique don't have to be beautiful.

He is very good I just dnt know why he dips his head and looks at the floor when doing certain techniques this is why he fell over during the Shoenage as he lost his structure. Where the the head goes the body follows. But who am I to criticize it's just my opinion

Still, one wonders what would've happened if he was malicious.... To think this man was 9 dan and former uchideshi for O' Sensei ... very very- unnecessarily in my humble opinion- violent..

What's horrible is your attitude. This man is 9th dan and trained directly with Ueshiba-sensei. Showboating, baton-twirling and throwing around know-nothing students is not good Aikido technique. Don't get yourself confused.

Matthew 7:6. Save your breath; they cannot understand. It must be felt. Having actually been thrown/controlled by this man (and trained with two of his closest students), i can at least say - based on those actual first hand experiences - that it was phenomenal. Elemental.

Omg you just can't say that is horrible because it is not soft. Softness practice is good for flowing work then you need to be more accurate in the contact to progress... he's the one who was there before so much called grandmasters in France or in US pretend to be... Guru masters you're in my aim better watch out before post...

Guardatevi Saito Sensei.
