And all of those malls are thriving, having adequate number of visitors, even if we can buy a lot of stuff online.

@PATRICK MAHOMES MVP 2020-2030 Walmart wasn't killing the malls but they did change the purpose of malls. really it were the big box stores in general that were building up around the malls that were strangling them. Malls used to have more than just clothing stores. the most probably will still be popular if the big boxes were forced to be in the mall instead of around it. The only stores that were competing with Amazon in 1995 were bookstores.

North East Mall is still thriving today. But it expanded, and extensively renovated. There are no longer 2 Dillard’s. They consolidated into a brand new location at the end of a new corridor added in 1999. The mall is currently anchored by JCPenney, Dillard’s, Macy’s, and Dick’s Sporting Goods with 2 vacant anchors formerly occupied by Sears and Nordstrom.

And in addition to the climate, now you have to look out for cars if you want to shop at a nearby store. I find myself just driving to that exact store, and that’s it. They tried to go higher-end after the renovations, with a Saks and Nordstrom, but both of the those anchors closed down (Saks in 2006, Nordstrom in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic). The official North East Mall website still lists Nordstrom as an anchor (as of 06/06/2020) but the company said they would not be reopening. That said, the view of the food court at 0:30 almost looks the same even today, aside from some aesthetic changes (as well as changes in the line-up of restaurants, of course).

Crazy to see how much this mall has changed over the years. It's pretty nice looking now, but it's a shame that North East lost many of its more upscale retailers that came in after the renovations in the early 2000s. Ever since Nordstrom closed, White House Black Market is one of the few stores I shop at that has a North East Mall location; however, the WHBM at University Park Village in Fort Worth is closer to my house and I normally go to that location now. I should note that WHBM is one of the more "upscale" retailers North East Mall still has; their clothes are gorgeous. I think WHBM opened at North East Mall around 2014-ish; WHBM expanded with a lot of stores in the early-to-mid 2010s it seems (they also opened a store in Sundance Square around the same time, but it closed during COVID). I don't recall too much about exactly when WHBM opened at North East, because I wasn't into that brand before 2017, not to mention the fact that 2014 was before I changed over to a more feminine gender expression, so I wasn't shopping in women's stores like WHBM before then (and I could have cared less about women's clothes). I just knew WHBM was there in September 2017 when I visited that store for the first time, because I did recall WHBM being there before then... and I felt really compelled to check out their North East Mall store while I had been shopping at the Parks Mall in Arlington for some reason (I didn't know they had a location at Arlington Highlands at the time), so I drove like crazy from Arlington to Hurst when I got done at the Parks.

People were not awkward hermits in the 90s. I dont know how that happened to people. And it was not a gradual change it was a quick change ( people going from social creatures to awkward hermits I mean). Generation X was the last generation that was social and not afraid of people. I guess smart devices and social media MIGHT be to blame? When smart devices came out for the first time I noticed how hunched over people were looking at their phones, standing in the mall. In my case I was walking at Grapevine Mills Mall in Grapevine TX. Outside the theater area there was this dude , typical standing hunched formation looking at his smart device. It was so odd to me. I think it was when Iphone was first released.
@sbclaridge Жыл бұрын
I suspect the same thing. The combination of smartphones and social media drove this change in behavior. Even when I'm at the mall by myself, I'm not normally hunched down, looking at my iPhone; I'm taking in the sights and window shopping. Sometimes I do look at my iPhone (obviously), but I like to savor the moment. I live in Fort Worth, and I'll admit that North East Mall is my favorite area mall. North East Mall has changed so much since the mid-1990s, especially with the expansion and renovation happening a few years after this was recorded. The mall became more upscale after that, especially with the addition of Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom (Saks only lasted a few years, but Nordstrom lasted almost two decades). They have gone back to being a typical mid-market mall, especially with the loss of Nordstrom, albeit with a few upscale remnants here and there. ~~~~~~ It doesn't help that North East Mall has my favorite women's clothing store (White House Black Market) in their store lineup. Normally I'll go to University Park Village (near TCU) for WHBM, because it's closer, but back when I went to TCU, ironically North East Mall was my preferred WHBM location. The WHBM at North East Mall opened in 2014, although University Park Village has had a WHBM store for longer. I do know that the WHBM brand really began to take off in the early-2000s (and accelerated in 2003 when Chico's acquired them), and it was during this period when the brand first made it to Texas. Back in 1995, the store was known as The White House and sold only women's clothing and accessories in white (hence the name), although that same year, a sister brand called Black Market selling women's clothing and accessories in all-black launched. The combined White House | Black Market concept launched in 1997; WHBM (as The White House) had its start in the Baltimore area in 1985, and I think their presence in the mid-1990s was largely concentrated in the mid-Atlantic, possibly with the exception of a store in Naples, Florida.

Vaporwave is a genre revolving around 80s and 90s commericals and homevideos. This is very aesthetic. Also Just google it

I remember Montgomery Ward! I used to own a pair of Simple blue suede shoes, and the suede had the leather furs over the suede. I used them for skateboarding. Great shoes.

*Goodwill t shirts at Fast Forward??? The white t’s with the blue right in the front of the entrance are what people who work at Goodwill wear, it’s their logo. Weird*

In late 90's & early 2000's North East Mall had my fav two stores...Bui-Yah-Kah & across from it RAVE... also there was another store right at the top of where the short stairs are.. I have tried to remember its name but can't!! They sold a lot of trendy stuff like Von Dutch, Ed Hardy & Whatever Missy Elliott's clothing brand was called!! Haha I remember loving that store.
