1995 Nissan D21 V6 A.T. Starter Swap

My 1995 Nissan Truck starter slowly started turning over much slower than it used to, so figuring it was the old battery that was the issue, I replaced it with a new Interstate battery from Costco. The truck has a V-6 and automatic transmission. After installing the new battery it did no good at all and with all the connection clean and free of any corrosion, I knew it must be the starter. I went down to O'Reilly's Auto Parts and bought a replacement. Not thinking it would be a big deal and probably take 20-30 minutes like any other starter I have ever done, I pulled the truck up onto service ramps. This is when I discovered that the engineers never intended for the starter to be serviced on this truck, but rather to last the life of the truck which was probably assumed to be no more than 10-15 years. Well, 30 years and 147K miles later the truck outlived the starter! It is wedged within the bowels of the frame and the engine, and looked to be a complete nightmare.
I called a local shop and they quoted me 4 hours just to remove the old starter. The guy told me they would have to remove the passenger wheel, fender liner, exhaust manifold, and remove the oil filter. He said to expect broken exhaust manifold studs and that the price would go up beyond the original 4 hour labor quote. Thats when I started brainstorming and trying to find videos online of others who had done the job. There was not a lot out there, so I decided to film my own.
Hope this helps! By the way it took me 3 hours and 15 minutes to complete the entire removal and replacement of the starter.

Good job replacing the starter on your D21 sweet truck by the way, I'm not looking forward to replacing the starter on my 2001 Nissan R50 Pathfinder 5-Speed 4X4 when it decides to quit. As it has very limited working room like your D21. Good job again keeping it alive. Chris.

Thank you- I love this little truck! It definetly was not a fun job, but the hundreds of dollars I saved doing it myself was very satisfying! When it comes time for yours, just pencil out a saturday and take your time, you can do it!

You should find out if you have a place that exclusively rebuilds and sells starters. My dad works at a place where he rebuilds starters and alternators, and that place also rebuilds brake boosters, cv axles, and rack n pinions. Places that rebuild parts should sell their stuff a lot cheaper than autozone or oreilly.
