I was in high school in 1994-1995 and my friends were into MtG. My family was too poor at the time for me to even think about playing it myself, but I watched with interest as my friends played and looked through their collections at the art. I remember we were all kind of secretive about it, because of the artwork of demons and pentagrams and people dying. Where we lived (the American South), the average person was deeply religious and suspected anything that wasn't directly church-related of being satanic. So we hid in dark corners of the lunch room and in our parents' basements playing MtG and D&D. I remember teachers watching us play and thinking we were gambling, only to see what was on the cards and end up believing we were up to something far more sinister! Good times.

A high school band buddy of mine back in 1998 bought some cards that he had another one of his friends hold onto, because his parents didn't want him to play (they also wouldn't let him read or watch Harry Potter). Eventually his parents found out he played. They made him give his collection to the friend that held onto it and quit the band. That's about the time in which I didn't really speak to him anymore; he just stopped hanging out. I felt bad for him.

I feel like a big part of the “secretive” vibe playing mtg or dnd have comes down to the relative complexity of this game’s. It’s not like football or basketball where you can give an easy over view of what’s going on, so whenever someone would come up to me and ask “what you doing?” I’d kinda just be stumped. like I can say I’m playing mtg but when they turn around and ask what that is or how to play it I just have nothing. It’s not quantum physics or rocket science but it’s also not something that can be easily explained in a short casual conversation with a passing stranger. You end up looking like you’re trying to keep a secret when really you just don’t want to get into it right now.

They didn't have to know all the minutiae to understand something basic like "I can activate the artefact to power up my guy and then I attack with him and he will probably block that with this guy" and usually after that length of time they're like "okay okay jeez I don't care THAT MUCH". Especially if I took the time to name them all and show the artwork and explain what kind of guy/thing they were. But like I totally understand. She even let me borrow her Anne Rice novels to read and she was the one who introduced me to Harry Potter, which she learned about from another mom in her Bible study class. I was always told to learn all I could, ask questions, have doubts, that is how you learn and grow. But, enough about myself, it is good to see more from you man, love the content as always. Your mother seems like a great person! More Theists need to be taught to question and doubt, because well... If their beliefs are true, what are they worried about? My parents were the same way. They were Christians and they never bought into any of this crap. I played D&D and Magic and our house became the "safe house" where my fellow geeks whose parents were not so cool could come and play and not be judged. I in turn came to believe in Christ Jesus and became a Christian too, as did many of my geek friends who came over to our house to play. Hmm... If yer not interested in what the Bible teaches go nah further! :P FYI - The Bible teaches that, far from outside influences "corrupting" us, we are already corrupt. (Psalm 51:5) We sin, says the Bible, when we are drawn away and enticed by *our own desires*. (James 1:14) So if your kid plays D&D and then goes and kills someone, that's because they already had the heart of a killer (psychopath) not because they played D&D. This is from Colossians 2, and illustrates why forbidding harmless things like D&D and Magic not only don't stop people bent on evil from doing evil but might even be harmful to those trying to do good: "Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: "Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!"? These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence." Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

There's a scholar, Silvia Federici, who wrote a book called Caliban and the Witch, where she posits the various historical witch hunts in Europe were essentially a backlash against the social power of women, and specifically how the figures of the village wise woman/witch were a threat to the newly emerging economic system of capitalism. Highly recommend it.

"The Dark is chilling because the elements of fantasy feel more decorative than foundational" For ages I have been wondering why I love The Dark thematically so much, but don't have such love towards something like Innistrad, and I think you just gave me the answer for that. Well, that and the artwork being hugely different. Innistrad feels way too "clean" with its digital artwork, while The Darks "water-paintery" style just oozes with atmosphere.

The Dark is my favorite set ever, first expansion I ever got my hands on and it’s art and themes really hook hold of my young imagination. It’s the set that think of the most fondly in terms of not just nostalgia but of flavor and overall continuity. Despite all this I’m not a mass murderer, child eater nor do I believe that I am possessed by demons though my wallet may disagree (for all the bread spent on this game).

Best Magic mag back then, imo. The place to look up magic card prices before the Internet. Iirc, an Alpha edition Black Lotus was 2000 USD, 600 in Unlimited, Sol Ring 250, Birds of Paradise 60, and Revised Duals 30-40. Being a 12-yo noob i spent my money on circles of protection instead of boosters, though, until 4th, Ice Age, Chronicles, Homelands, and finally Alliances. Mirage introducing yet more annoying rules to memorize (phasing) and me not yet having completed my Alliances collection, i took a 15 year break until the Xbox 360 game offered a free Planeswalker card.

My grandmother thought all playing cards were satanic. She would sit in her kitchen chair smoking and drinking and glaring at us while we would play any TCG. Marvel's Overpower was my favorite at the time. I remember having to talk to my parents about magic the gathering when I wanted to play in 96 or 97. The bad press had a lasting impact on parents at that time. My friend gave me a few cards, I decided to show them a Craw Wurm and some other green cards. I didn't think they would like any of the black cards, and even some of the white cards seemed like something they wouldn't have liked. But they decided to be okay and took me and my younger brother to a local hobby shop to get a few cards to play with.

With the circle it's still Judaic tradition as the Seal of Solomon, also Judaism has a MASSIVE tradition of demonology even though there isn't really a God/Satan pairing like there is in Christianity. Identifying Judaic practices as "occult" without context is a frequent feature of US based evangelical manipulations of discourse. Many things that get rolled into "occult" are just other people's religions or ethnic family practices. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seal_of_Solomon

This is a very measured video. Obviously we know your takeaway, of course Magic isn't satanic, or, even if it were, certainly not malicious. That being said, I appreciate how much you lend legitimacy to the concerns from the perspective of people who were there, because, to be fair, some of the artwork of the early sets could be pretty unsettling. It was unashamedly raw, and the elements that were very much couched in reality being so near to the elements that were fantastical was quite interesting. Unprecedentedly virtuosic card art is Magic's MO these days, but the high craftwork of the art likely puts them more squarely in the realm of illustrations in people's minds, as opposed to depictions. Looking at the original artwork for Sacrifice, I can see how that might've been legitimately troubling, even more so than DnD, despite the fact that I still disagree with their conclusions. I suppose I take less issue with the concern itself than the hypocrisy, because even at the time, film was generally long past that level scrutiny. Card games, roleplaying games, video games, much of music... Not to lean too heavily into the oppression narrative, but there's definitely something to be said for the majority of criticism and social stigma being directed at things that were relevant to the young and/or non-mainstream culture. Food for thought.
