On 11th May 1996, a few days after performing "Earth Song" at the World Music Awards 1996 in Monaco, Michael Jackson went to Germany to inaugurate a new roller coaster in the "Phantasialand" amusement park in Brühl, near Cologne. Michael apparently had some input in the creation of the roller coaster (see 11:08), so it was called "The Michael Jackson Thrill Ride". I live a little more than an hour away from phantasialand (I live in the Netherlands, near the border of Germany) and my boyfriend works at a roller coaster making company. They opened a new ride, which my boyfriend has helped to work on, last year in Phantasialand, which gave me and him free tickets to go there. I went in this ride too. I remember thinking the whole time "Oh my god, Michael has been in this ride too!" while I was on it. It's an awesome ride. Together with the new one and another roller coaster that's inside, this one definitely makes the top 3 of my favorite rides in Phantasialand🎉🎉

I think it was his main market at the time, "Earth Song" and "They Don't Care About Us" were his biggest hits here ever. So lots of appearances to do, to keep the fire going. In the USA, "Earth Song" wasn't even released as a single for whatever reason.

Ja, der Ton der Boulevard-Medien und Feuilletons war damals meistens respektlos. Aber ich denke nicht, dass sich das bei den deutschen Moderatoren / Sprechern durch Benutzung von "Jacko" ausgedrückt hat. Das eine Interview von 1997 (!), in dem Michael das Thema erstmals ansprach, hat kaum ein Normalo mitbekommen. Als Fan ist man natürlich immer schlauer. Vor allem jetzt, wo man seit einigen Jahren auch wissen kann, dass "Jacko" im britischen Slang einen historisch rassistischen Hintergrund hat. Aber selbst in UK wird das kaum ein Normalo wissen. Der weiße australische Schauspieler Hugh Jackman wird übrigens auch "Jacko" genannt. Für die meisten ist und war das einfach ein Spitzname.
