Try this before replacing your whining PS Pump.
WARNING !!! WARNING WARNING UPDATE !!!!!
Do not use Power steering fluid...
USE DEXTRON II ATF.
When I made this video I used a turkey baster with a hose on it. But since then I found a fluid hand pump and the job is way easier and this pump can be used for a whole mess of auto/shop uses. Checkout the link below.
www.amazon.com...
UPDATE.... After running the 4Runner for a while I sucked out the PS Fluid again and got some more sludge. Some was still in the lines I would imagine. I plan on doing this again when I do my next oil change. should be good for another 200,000

Thanks sooooo much. I have a 99 tacoma 2.4 litre that was whining intermittently. It has 213,000 miles on it. I did this with a 2 dollars turkey baster. And a 50 cent piece of tubing from the hardware store. And now no more noise. Thanks again.

I would flush the system (suck out the fluid) again and add fresh ATF, it may take a bit to get back to normal. If that helps then maybe flush again after a few hundred miles, that is what I would do..... Its worth a try. Good luck.

First time got rid of the acute whine, but still had whine until warmed up. Tried two additional times(about half cup each time, had some fine particles in fluid) but did not solve the whine while cold issue. Then flushed entire power steering circuit (easier than oil+filter change), which might have worked. Will update later!

Cold whine almost 100% gone, I'm starting to suspect the flush was not even necessary. Ready for the next 270K miles! Thank you breakerbroke23!!!!

David A. Krause what exactly did you do other than the flush?
@davida.krause9162
@davida.krause9162 6 жыл бұрын
Just the flush. The cold whine (that was still present after the flush) disappeared within a week. So it appears the whine was due to air that had not yet worked itself out of the system. Does this answer your question?

This tip saved me time , money and the headache of changing the pump. I have a 98 Tacoma 2.4l 2wd. My steering started making noise from one day to the other. I though it might be a Ps fluid leak and since not long ago I had also replaced the whole rack and pinion I was hoping it wasnt that. I inspected everything and noticed no fluid loss at the reservoir or on the ground, that was surprising but I did noticed the upper return hose was cracked and had a little wet area, it was old and needed replacing. I also noticed when removing the cap and the engine running that there were air bubbles in the fluid. So I replaced the hose with a new piece and added a bit of new fluid and primed the air out of the system. It was a little better but still making noise and hard to turn the wheel. I thought great the pump must need to be replaced but thanks to your video it was exactly the same thing you had going, the reservoir needed a little cleaning down there at the screen. Mine was not really dirty.from what I could see but whatever it is like new now, smooth and zero noise. Thanks alot for the help you really helped me out🎉😊👍.

I'm so glad this worked for you. About a year later the noise in mine started to come back so I did this flush again and it has not returned. I'm wondering about the fluid I didnt get the first time, maybe just fluid that lost its properties over time.. Cheers

mine is pumping the fluid around but still whining. it started making the whine when it cooled off to the 20s yesterday. power steering fluid gets old after about 8 to 12 years. I've found that draining the fluid, refilling and running two to three times with new fluid gets the whining to go away in most cars/trucks without changing the pump as most repair shops will try to do. thx for the tips. I will go check the vacuum lines, too. btw, I love mickey's! great malty beer.

It whines when its very cold outside, I have pumped out the fluid twice, seams to be better each time, but I think I have a seal problem inside my pump. could have been due to have power steering fluid instead of ATF. I think taking off the return line and flushing with ATF may be the way to go. Let us know what you find
