This video covers the safety aspect as well as cleaning, BUT, people search out the SHOE-BRAKE replacement video in order to see the actual disassembly and reassembly process. As in: How the brake shoe adjuster is oriented and especially for the Emergency Brake Cable part. I was floored when you came back from break, only to find that you had disassembled and reassembled every part. Beggars can't be choosers, but this video reminded me of what happened to me in the back seat of my '71 Chevelle SS after my high school Senior Prom ( Circa 1976 ); The similarity is eerie, the Chevelle had rear drum brakes and Mary Jane Rotten-Crotch finished the job without me.

Thank you for watching the video and for the fine complement. The few times I have taken vehicles into the dealers they always come back screwed up. Case in point: the Toyota dealer stripped out our transmission drain plug and pan when I had the fluid changed by them a few years ago. That was a long and painful repair.

When you spend the time to do a video in order to help others, given that was the purpose of the video, you assume people have very little knowlege of the subject, am I correct? I mean otherwise, why would someone put an instructional video that shows how to take the drum off...I am willing to bet people can do that on their own....Taking the springs off, showing the 90 degree turn and the technic of putting the spring back, adjusting the brake is more involved than showing how to takeoff drum.

I'm sure your truck wouldn't need it considering your Yota is basically the holy grail of 4runners but would you ever run any kind of Seafoam or any other fuel/oil treatment especially the kind where you administer into the brake booster line? It would be great to hear what your opinion would be when trying to bring other 2.7 3RZ's back to life.
@redonKiLaus8 жыл бұрын
I actually ran Seafoam through the booster line as well as the PCV line (in order to ensure even distribution to all cylinders) not too long ago...it definitely improved the idle on my truck, and alerted me to the presence of an exhaust leak just after my turbocharger. I also run Chevron Techron (the bottle) through my fuel system once or twice a year, which helps to keep the injectors cleaned out and working properly. As far as bringing the 3RZ back to life, you definitely want to keep up with air and fuel filters, as well as checking/replacing the factory exhaust manifold since it often cracks if it's the cast iron version. You also want to make sure to check your valves if you have over 100k miles...the valves are known for getting too tight, especially on the exhaust side, eventually leading to burnt valves. Other than that, regular maintenance should keep you going for a very long time. Hopefully that helps, and thanks for watching!

Hey there, thanks for sharing the video. I'm currently working on my '04 Tacoma which is fairly similar. Can you explain how you got that main return spring back on? The one that you used channel locks to get off. I've got everything else back together but can't seem to get that main spring back on. Thanks.
@redonKiLaus11 жыл бұрын
I hooked in one side of the spring, grabbed the other side with my Channel Locks, and used the hub as a lever to get the spring in. It was very difficult, and please wear safety glasses when you do this because I don't want you to lose an eye. After that, I went ahead and ordered a return spring tool from Amazon. Good luck, and thanks for watching!
@BoogWar0110 жыл бұрын
If you have a long screwdriver, hook the spring on its shank and put the tip of the screwdriver into the hole u want the spring to hook into. Now lever the spring so that the shank of the screwdriver is perpendicular to the hole, and push the spring down the shank until it hooks. You might not get it the first try but you will. If that fails, then break down and get a pair of vise grips. They work great too.

KZbinrs I need some help. I have a 2008 4runner, the issue is that my ABS, TRAC and BRAKE lights went on all of sudden, my truck still drives and brakes fine but I need to fix those lights. About a month ago, not sure, the two front break pads and disk were replaced, and the left rear bearing was replaced as well. Don't know what might be the problem. Please help.
@redonKiLaus8 жыл бұрын
My 4Runner does not have ABS, and I don't have a whole lot of personal experience with the Toyota truck ABS systems. From what I understand, when doing wheel bearings or other hub work, it's fairly easy to damage the O-ring sealing the ABS tone ring, so that may be your issue. I suggest consulting the 4th gen section of T4R.org to see what others have done to solve the issue, as it seems to be relatively common. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
@erickstone52478 жыл бұрын
I have a 2001 Limited Toyota 4 Runner and I had the exact same thing happen when I was replacing the FRONT brakes and the tie rods. I was attempting to remove the front right tie rod when I accidentally broke the ABS sensor. The ABS sensor connection point is located very close to the brakes and ties rods so this does happen from time to time when replacing your brakes, or thats what I was told. If you have a code scanner, then you can find out which one it may be. If not, you can take it to a auto body shop and have then use their scanners to tell you which one it is. When I broke my ABS sensor, I had the ABS, TRAC, and one other light come up. I would start there first.

when i first bought my 01 4runner i had it inspected and the tech used a rubber mallet hammer to strike the drums towards getting the drums off. now my car drives like shit like there is some friction or something. and the rear axle seals on both sides keep leaking or breaking. on this video the guy uses two screw to seperate teh drums. idon't know why my tech used a hammer to bang on the drums of my car. i hated the mere though of a hammer striking my car. does anyone think that the tech might have screwed up my car and made the seals keep breaking? toyota wants 900 dollars to put new seals on the rear axle!
@redonKiLaus10 жыл бұрын
It's possible that the tech may have damaged your truck when he looked at your rear brakes. You are definitely not supposed to use a mallet or hammer to take off the drums; the only proper way, and the way outlined in the Toyota service manual, is by using the bolts specified by Toyota. If he caused damage, that could definitely be the cause of your leaking axle seals. The friction you are feeling when driving could also be due to the tech improperly adjusting the rear brake shoes after he put the drum back on; you only adjust them to a certain point, and then they self-adjust when you use the e-brake. Your rear axle breather may also be clogged, which can cause the the axle seals to blow out. If you want more advice, make an account on t4r.org and post your problem in the 3rd Generation section - I guarantee you will get loads of help over there.
@timswift2000110 жыл бұрын

redonKiLaus on tr4 shoudl i just start a new thread or do something to find a thread already about the topic of axle seals breaking or something?thanks
@redonKiLaus10 жыл бұрын
I'm just a car guy who knows a lot of things about a variety of different vehicles. If your axle seals have broken twice in one year, something is definitely very wrong. Make sure that once you figure out what the problem is, you replace the axle seals with OEM Toyota ones - they are known to hold much better than any aftermarket ones.
@redonKiLaus10 жыл бұрын
As for the thread on T4R, the general rule of thumb there (and on most forums) is search first, and post if you cannot find a solution to your problem. The axle seals blowing are not unheard of, especially with guys who take their trucks offroad, so you can definitely find some information on them. With your particular combination of symptoms, though (friction/drivetrain drag, axle seals blowing, tech hammering on the drums), you might want to go ahead and post a thread first. Just make sure you list all of the symptoms/details about what led up to your issue.
