I am 80 years old, so I remember the weekly Championship Bowling TV series and the PBA Championship tv shows with Chris Schenkel. Those were the golden years of bowling. This tournament was near the end of that era, as ABC drastically reduced the amount it paid the PBA for the rights to each tournament. What is most striking to me is the relative class of the top bowlers of that era vs the best bowlers of today. Bowling is a much easier game that it was in the 60's and 80's, but that is a different discussion. In my era we had true gentlemen professional bowlers like Don Carter, Billy Hardwick, Buddy Bomar, and MANY others including Johnny Petraglia. Today, we have egotistical loudmouths like Pete Weber (who doesn't have 10% of the class of his father Dick), Kyle Troup who looks and dresses like a backup singer for the 5th Dimension (I'm old remember), plus other confrontational showoffs too numerous to mention. I long for the old days, but I guess it is a sign of the times that professional sports has become a more in your face kind of activity instead of competition between two friendly opponents. I think we have definitely lost something over the past 60 years or so.
