I found a '90 non turbo z32 with 72k a year ago and bought it. It is in nearly perfect condition because it was garaged its entire existence. I get stopped all the time by people who love its looks. When my t tops are off, people dip their heads in for a look and cant believe the interior design. I love the car, I smile while I drive this baby all the time. its quick for what it is...just not fast by today's standards. Every little hot rodder wants to race and I let them think its a twin turbo if they want and ignore them.

The interior is one of the best designs ever with the sloping dash that wraps around. All the climate controls right at the driver reach near the steering wheel. They thought of everything including putting the shifter on the same plane as the wheel to reduce the time between wheel and shifter.
@skip741x34 жыл бұрын
That is one timeless design, inside and out! it Does still look modern, even now, such fluid lines...the interior is Way nicer than current cars with their retro modoern tech look and chopped up dash with tacked on screens... this interior Flows and has a beautiful center console that I wish any current ccar had...so nice! I remember test driving these back in the day, when I;d sneak away from the dealership and then go balastic in my test drives! It was Genuinely Quick and actually thrilling when pushed...remember that in its time, it was seriously fast.

Picked up a 1995 twin turbo with 12,500 miles back in December of 2014, took delivery in January 2015. beautiful car in mint condition, this is the third z car i've owned. some one kept it stored for about 20 years, it has been my daily driver for the last two years

Has it been reliable? I have heard the 300zx are not very reliable.

It has been for the most part. Currently out of commission due to some shifting issues, I have already purchased the transmission shift solenoid but there are other parts that I am going to replace. ( torque converter solenoid, filter, gasket and valve body upgrade spring kit ) and hopefully that will take care of my transmission shift problem.

I had that exact same car, (Except the color, mine was burgundy) in 96. Bought it off the show room floor. I really wish that I had the foresight to take care of it the way the owner of your episode vehicle did. I drove the hell out of my car. I lived in Denver at the time, and every weekend I was in the twisted roads of the Rocky mountain range. The 4 wheel steering was sublime, the engine was perfection. I even had a....wait for it......in dash CD player!!!!! (The only option you could get on that car at that time.)Tops off in the summer driving around in the sultry summer heat day and night, I was always in my car. I loved it more than my girlfriend at the time....and yes, she knew it. What memories this episode brought back. Great job.

Man I loved mine. I got a silver one new in '93. I chipped it, swapped out the intercoolers, air intake and exhaust system for HKS ones. It was damn fast for the era. I've never once been drawn to the 350 or 370 ZX though. Also, I actually owned a 928S and always said how similar the dash design was. I think you're the first person I've ever heard comment about the similarities.

I just bought a 96 300zx Turbo, exactly like the one depicted in the video, black on black leather, except mine isnt one of the last 300. Coming from driving a 91 Trans Am GTA throughout highschool with 250hp and 345ft-lbs of torque, this thing is insane. I feel like the 300hp/283lb-ft was highly under-rated, because the turbo models are absolute monsters. Definitely struck a deal when i picked it up for $10,000.

I just bought a 94 TT with 91k. Bought it and don't regret it. I was very fortunate to purchase a beautiful example of a used 300ZX Twin Turbo. I see and hear about a lot that are beat like a red headed step child and then sold to the next guy. Mine appears to have avoided much of a beating. I am looking forward to respraying the car to bright back the Cherry Red paint and putting some nicer wheels on it. A few other tasteful upgrades are planned but when complete I want this car to be a highway cruiser/cayon car. I've been in love with the lines of the 300ZX since I first saw one back in the 90s. Now, it's my chance to live out all those day dreams I had as a kid.

I've owned a '79 280ZX 2+2, then an '85 Z31 NA, and then a '91 Z32 TT - all were bought used as I was driving after their prime. All three of these were fun cars to drive and own. The last one was the most fun to drive, smoking Z28s of that era around corners, but its short lifespan made owning it a drag. After about 110k miles the engine had enough. Replacing the engine requires getting an appropriate turbo system to match, which starts to add up if you're not making money on the track. It's a conundrum, because you can't *not* drive it! The Z31 in my experience was a nice, reliable car with a decent amount of go. It was a tad faster than my 280, but nothing face peeling. The shorter wheelbase made it corner better. The '79 280ZX 2+2 was my first, and I drove it as a senior in hs in the '92-'93 school year (and for another year after). I honed my driving "skills" on it and enjoyed its uniqueness and style. There was lots of room under the hood to work on its incredible I-6, and there was a great sense of information control as I monitored all the gauges inside. Although the two extra seats were handy for driving around cute girls, I always wanted the shorter 2-seater. Considering all this, I think I would prefer the 280 the most, out of the ones you show. Now, if authenticity weren't required, I'd still like to make something of the 280ZX with some modern components. First, I'd beefen up the rear suspension so it doesn't sit like a frog on launch. I might cut more clearance in the wheel wells for larger tires, and maybe somehow widen the whole body by about 6 inches (as they did for racing versions). I'd make the blinkers flush and remove excess trim. I'd keep the shape of the bumpers, but maybe refine them a little bit if possible. Last but not least, I'd do whatever I could to give that I-6 more power to thrive on today's highways. I wouldn't want to build a champion, just something that can deliver modern expectations through classic design.

This video brought me back.. I owned a 1983 280zx, then a 1990 300zx tt, and then a 1994 300zxtt (purchased in 1997).. All the work, i did to the 94 300zx was, short throw shifter, bigger intercoolers, computer upgrade, exhaust and intake.. The car was a total animal,, I was destroying corvettes quite easily at the time.... If i went back in time, i would of kept that Z until today..

back in the 00's I had a (functionally) stock z32, sans turbos. third owner. even being the "wimpier" model, every time I drove it was a blast. living in the city, the acceleration was more than enough to be the first off the line at a stoplight, or pass some dickhead who thought LED's make you go faster. only issue was... maintenance nightmare. it developed this fun quirk where the engine would die when you depressed the clutch about 50% of the time. UNLESS the A/C was on. took it to five different shops, got five different solutions, none of them worked. ended up trading it in for scrap value when I moved to a snowier climate. but it had a LOT of hard, desert miles, so I don't have any regrets. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. especially now that I've gotten the fuck out of Tucson...

the first gen. hands down. i love just that old school look and feel. i actually happen to own the 1980 280zx n i love it more than any other car. i bought the car broken down for $500 dollars when i was only in ten yrs im now 23 yrs old, i remember begging my father to buy it for me and i would pay him back with errands and work around the house or his work trucks. ive done all the work myself my father to this day can not believe i still have the car and how much i treasure it. i appreciate every little detail on it man. i wouldnt trade it for any other car. i still thank my father for actually getting it for me at such a young knowing damn right i wasnt going to be able to drive it for a good period of time. i remember being so excited and anxious to get home from school to work on it, wash it even just sit in it. as of today the car is sittin in my garage covered up and i go in there every day to just stare at it. i only take it out on the weekends just to cruise around take it to the car wash and absolutely love when older men walk up to me and compliment it and tell me their story with the z cars. its amazing.

I agree that this car is still a screaming bargain. With early year 240 Zs beginning to climb in value, Z32 prices are riding the tide higher. I've owned a '93 TT w/ 50k miles since 2001 and in my opinion finding a well maintained example is becoming increasingly more difficult. Today (2016) A super clean 90-95 300ZX with sensible aftermarket parts, e.g., 400hp, are selling in the range of $12-14,000. Junkers are found everyday under $5K; and the last stock all OEM survivor I saw had 15k miles and sold on Ebay for $22,000. These prices (except for rolling wrecks) will soon be a thing of the past. If you get a chance to drive a nice twin turbo you'll be convinced that they are beautifully styled automobiles that have a ton of comfort and performance.

I bought my pearl white '93 TT in 2001 from the original owner with 48k miles on it. I think I paid $11,500 for it - a lot for an 18yo. Shortly after that, I'd built it up to 525hp while keeping the exterior 100% stock, save for the '99 Japanese spec tail lights, period correct Work VS-XX wheels (in gold, of course) and a B&B quad-oval exhaust. People seem to have a lot of love for the Z32. Nearly every time I have it out, someone goes out of their way to give me a thumbs-up, or tell me how they used to have one, or how they've always wanted one. The Z32 seems to be one of those rare cars that people dreamed about for years and then later found they could actually afford one. They are/were quite attainable... Though I hope that begins to change. I've managed to bring mine up to 75k miles over the last 17 years, but living in Thailand for the past 5 years has made me miss it a bit. Bringing that average down, though... Anyhow, nice video. Thanks for putting this up.

Cool video. Unfortunately, '96 was the year that the Z32 300ZX Twin Turbo was most stifled from the factory. I currently own two Z32's - a '95 Twin Turbo with 180,000 miles on it, and a '90 (299th ever made) N/A with 130,000 miles. I'm selling the N/A to restore the TT to showroom OEM condition. I've now had 3 Z32's, and regardless of age, miles, or fault, they're simply irresistible and I ALWAYS can't wait to get in and drive them. I've driven more cars than I can count - F40's, 911's, Countach's, Skyline GT-R's, RX-7's... no car is as user friendly and enjoyable to drive and ride in as a Z32, besides perhaps an NA1 NSX.

This Z is still the only Nissan I'd buy today. This car still looks good, even with the funky orange peel on the lower half (presumably for protection on track days). Who doesn't love a T-top? The car was electronically governed to have an artificial top speed of 159. The ECU upgrades were plug and play 20% HP increases. From the factory this car was low compression, low boost, and 200RPM lower revs. As mind blowing as 100HP/L was back then, it wasn't near its potential when the computer upgrades added another 60-65 HP.

It's the Z32 for me! That's because I owned a brand new one I special ordered in 1993...Super White with the tan leather interior. I was still in college at the University of Tennessee Knoxville and 22 years old. That car arouses so many memories from perhaps the best times of my life. I later lost the car in my divorce and have and have held a degree of bitterness about it since. If the car had not been forceably taken from me by the Judge I would never have let this car go. I would without a doubt still own it today. The trauma from my divorce came from the loss of that car and is the sore that will never quite heal. I am quite certain that is why my ex was so interested in taking it. She knew the pain of losing it was going to be much greater and far longer felt than simply losing her...lol. I would never tell her this but she was right. She would get so much pleasure knowing that she still manages to cause me pain today every time I think about that car being gone. It's one of the worst things that has ever happened to me...lol. Her memory is already fading but the car I remember like it was yesterday. Oh, and yes, they definitely need to bring back the t-tops! I have an NC Mazda Miata today. Love it as well. I bring up the MX to point out that even with a fully retracting convertible top it is just not the same. There is an unexplainable magic that t-tops bring...when they are engineered as well as these were. Never squeaked, tattled, or leaked and were free of any wind noise.

Citing that he doesn't want to let it go because not only has it been in his life for around twenty years, but other than General maintenance, he hasn't really had to do anything. Save for replacing a headlight in 2007 because his (Ex) girlfriend slammed it with a baseball bat. Which is how he found out they're also the Lamborghini Diablo headlights.

I wish he would stop referring to that 280zx as a Turbo car. With 145hp, it's a non-turbo. The turbo was about 180hp, and was significantly faster. He also gave 2 completely different weights for the Z32. First it was 3501 lbs, then 3373. Which is it? Also- The Supra wasn't gone from the US in 1996. It was sold in the US until 1998.

Regardless, this was the ultimate in Zs. I worked for NMC in the early to mid 90s. These cars make me drool. Nissan was at the top of it's game back then. Hopefully Nissan will make cars of this quality again. One can only hope......

Bought my Z32 TT it had 90,000 kilometres today 20 years later it has 270,000 kilometres same turbos engine never been out, as long as you keep it serviced it will go forever, you will go through clutches and brakes if you hammer it though.

I had a red convertible, unfortunately, non-turbo kept it 15 years when normally I'd move on after 2 years. It really was so much fun to drive and attracted attention where ever we went, being a "ragtop" it was rare in OZ, wish now I'd kept it

I was a teen in the 90s, but the sexy angular 80s japanese style, especially with the digital dash just steal my heart! You can keep your melted bar of soap of a twin turbo, doesn't even have the center gauges, is it even truly a Z car? J/k of course, I love the z32, just not for me.

I remember seeing one of those when I was in my teens. Man, it looked like from outer space comparing to other European cars around me. I mean it was so advanced ad incredibly designed and all that tech was so advanced and high quality in that era. Sure we have beautiful cars these days, but nothing is shocking like this was when it came out. Fun fact - the Renault Laguna Coupé I drive today has the same "Super Hicas" system only it is called 4Control. The tech came along with their merger with NIssan - and it is a fantastic piece of kit ;)

I fully agree with you that it was way ahead of its time than any other car , past and present. Its just a beautiful car that never, never ages.

The first car I owned was a 280zx in 1991 and that car was fast. I was never able to reach top speed with it, but I got to a 130MH before I was pulled by a cop and never repeated that.

Such a beautiful car design 30 years later... 1991-2021 So good Lamborghini used Z32 the headlights on their Diablo.

Great cars I had a 1987 z31 2+2 manual shift for 7 years until 2003. did about 40 thousand miles in it...fast miles. The only thing I had to do to it, was change the propshaft - replacing the 2 piece was too expensive, I just put in a single drive shaft. It had the z32 engine in it with a large diameter turbo (after market) it was spooled up at 1500 rpm, no lag. Tons of torque and 360 HP at the back wheels. I am hoping to get an 1990 twin turbo close to standard and do a chip tune on it. I think this is a better looking car.

The sway you’re feeling in the rear end is the all wheel steering. Many got rid of the system as it gave an unnatural feel in the corners and added weight to the car.

I bought a 1994 300ZX(non-turbo) when I was in grad-school in the late 90s....I loved that car. To be honest, I think if I ever bought another Z car, I would go old school...and buy the highest quality example 240Z I could get my hands on.

I have a 93tt that I have owned for 25 years and have owned an 89 NA Z31, and a 72 240 Z. The 240 got the most attention, but the 93 is the most fun to drive.

I grew up loving the Z32, and later bought (and still own) a Z33... the Z32 will start to rise in collector value and will match the price of when new within 8 years time (i wouldnt be surprised if an unmolested example will reach the high 60's/70's $k range). And if you own a beat up Z32, bring that baby up to factory showroom spec, as Nissan may still have a decent amount of spare inventory to help you do so.

Z32!!!! I used to walk to the Nissan dealership at night just to look at them after hours and not be harassed

You should see the titanium key that came with it. Most owners kept them when they sold em. I shoulda kept mine. eBay had one from a dealership for $1,000. Just for the key. And it IS a work of art.

Love that CTS-V! But, his math is off on the balance he stated. I'm sure he caught it, too but didn't think anyone would catch it. I believe he said 52.2% front and 42.2% rear. Ahhhh... I think not. Thanks for letting us see this review, MM. Great! Still waiting for the GTO!

Interesting Tidbit, the Z32 (Second Gen) 300ZX Twin Turbo was one of the first production cars EVER, to be completely designed on CAD/CAM software.

Thanks for this video review on Z cars. When I was in high school it was the 300zx, and I bought one brand new when before I graduated from college.(z32) non turbo model 2+2 for convenience. I choose the Z over the 944 and corvette. Due to reliability. The corvette had more horse power and torque. And the 944 was the same price $32k - 34k brand new. But I knew the maintenance cost would be higher. (Motor mount need to be change at 45k miles). My BMW 325e maintenances was quite costly.(German cars). The Z design was fresh and quite slick at time. Although the 944 was a more solid car and better balance. I do regret on not getting the 944. I love Porsche, it is a well made car with 50/50 distribution. Anyway, the 350z and 370z?! I think it has lost the touch of the 240z, 280zx, 300zx pedigree. Once again, I enjoyed watching your channel. Keep up the great work. Motorman--

Hands down the twin turbo Z32. My best friend had a 91 300zx I had a 88 rx7 both of us 19. We had so much fun switching cars on the weekends, drifting and beating the piss out of both cars. Sometime the turbos would work on the Z and some days they just never spooled up haha! it had character(problems) and I loved it. Great video MotoMan I think I shed a tear watching it. Thank you.

Back in '91 when I was in boot camp at Parris Island, we would get marched from 1st battalion over to the area where dental and the hosptial was. Some officer had a red 300Z. I saw it parked on the street all the time. I knew it was an officer 'cause there was a blue sticker in his windshield. I would fantasize about owning one every time we passed it. Of course I own an STi now but if I had the $ I would love to have one of these.
