Modern Saree Centre was one of the most famous saree shops in Brick Lane, the most successful of the 80s when almost every Bengali family used to do their wedding shopping in that shop.

The Sheraz restaurant on the corner was originally the 'Frying Pan' pub from the 19th century onwards. In 1888, Jack the Rippers first (or maybe his second victim) was last seen drinking in there shortly before she was found butchered on Durward Street (which leads between Vallance Road and Brady Street).

Sweet and Spicy did the best dal and the best pilau rice, and had bad paintings of wrestlers on the wall
