Reports
Frenchman Laurent Jalabert gave a surprise and with his sensational performance, beat the great favorites including his teammates Alex Zulle & Melchor Mauri, in the individual time trial of the World Championships. Laurent Jalabert won the gold medal when he covered the 42.8km in 52 minutes and 1 second, which translates into an average speed of 49.135 km.hr; while Ukranian Serguei Gontchar and British Christopher Boardman accompanied him on the podium.
The great defeat was for Swiss Alex Zulle, recent winner of la Vuelta a España and who rode defending the title that he won last year, but from the start bad luck became his friend. Practically from the start ramp he suffered a flat, which would influence his behavior in the rest of the race and then at km19, he had another flat. Russian Eugeni Berzin didn't ride as expected either, a rider with the class and style for the time trial, but didn't perform. Maybe because like he said a few days ago, the Worlds were sort of a test for his Hour Record attempt.
So the time trial became a "mano a mano" between Jalabert & Gontchar since the first time check (19.1km). At this point Gontchar passed with a time of 21:49 with Jalabert at 22:06. The other favorites, Boardman, Zulle, Peschel, Rominger and Mauri passed with a time larger than 22:10. The gap between Jalabert, (who used 54 & 44 chainrings, with a 11 to 21 cassette) and Gontchar increased, since at km27.2 the two rider kept increasing the differences with the favorites, where only Rominger showed any sort of form.
The last part of the race was exciting. It was the most difficult and theoretically more suited for the Ukranian, since he's a specialist and the small climb of Oriamendi almost at the finish. Luckily for Jalabert, the Ukranian paid for his previous effort and started to lose time in the last six kilometers, since he had to stand up on the bike to maintain his rhythm, which made him lose his aerodynamic advantage.
