1998 Alfa Romeo 156 - Full Design Overview & Behind The Scenes

I bought a 2 litre twin spark 156 in 1998. I have loved this car ever since - it takes me shopping locally / takes me to Spain / always gives me pleasure. It does have some "features" but more importantly it has soul :>))

Bought a 2 litre back in 1998. Went all over Europe in it. At 100k miles I replaced it with a Jaguar, but could not part with the 156. Still have it, use it regularly and would never part with it. Liked it so much I recently bought a 2.5 V6, which is also a wonderful car, maybe not as nimble. They are both cars I want to look back at when walking away....

I owned two 156 and later a 159 2.4 jtd - but the 156 was the real stuff. I am going to buy a 156 again very soon, because I simply love the car, despite its flaws.

I did own this car for 12 years and it was great. Fun to drive and cheap to own as it was very reliable. I miss it :( To bad Alfa has no car today that is that great.

I still have it, firs i had one from 1999, few years ago i bought one from 2003, the facelift one it is great and i hope, it will serve me for a long time more, Greetings from Bosnia

I've owned one of these as well for some time. It was a manual with the 2.5 V6, absolutely great fun to drive, nothing ever went wrong. Doesn't amaze me at all why it earned the car of the year award. However, the Citroen Xsaras 5th place... Why? Well, I guess it was quite cheap, but other than that. After the Xsara I think all citroens have been quite boring. I miss the times when there still were a lot of CX's and BX's on the road. Now they are trying to earn the funky reputation back with the C4 Cactus, which I think looks great. Just like a Citroen should. The inside of the car however is too bland.

Hmm..safety, running costs, environment friendly features, price, resale value..how the hell did this thing win then. The Alfa scores zero in all of them. I think the reviewers just fell in love a little and turned a blind eye to all of the problems this car has. Can't say I blame them ;)

+eggbirdtherooster Safety was about on par with many other cars of the time. Dual airbags were standard and Euro NCAP wasnt around back then. Nothing particularly bad about fuel economy, My 1.7 used to do 35mpg all day long. Price, it was pretty well priced compared to its rivals of the time. A 3 series or C-Class were vastly more expensive for similar equipment levels, while an A4 was terrible to drive, with a horrible ride quality, dull inside and out with noisy/thirsty VW engines. What environmentally features were in any car back then? Also remember the 2.4 diesel came out shortly afterwards which was the most advanced diesel engine of the time and is STILL the blueprint for other manufacturers today. But I know...its not perfect. The storage space is beyond terrible in them.

I Dislike Alfa Romeo's cars are the Mechanical side of the car if it brakes down it can many 100s or 1000s of $$$$ that why i don't like Alfa Romeo's .

Jo Tyers Mechanically they are fine, suspension is a little fragile, but mostly front upper wishbones, which are ezpz and cheap to replace. Especially 2.5 V6 does it job, engine is pretty much indestructible if you care a tiny bit about your car and change stuff on time. Also the V6 has 2 bulletproof transmission systems - 6speed manual Getrag or 4speed auto Aisin, both need very little care, especially automatic. To be perfectly honest most issues come from awful Bosch electrics, although mine has over 150k mileage and things that broke down were cosmetics, issues with some switches and once with turn signals + side airbag error due to old cables under the seat.
