1998 Chevy Tahoe Oil Filter Adapter Seal and Gasket Replacement

I'm no pro, so do this job at your own risk. Having never done it before, I was able to replace all the parts in under an hour. This is a four wheel drive, so the adapter also has oil cooler lines. Safety first, use safety stands, wear safety glasses, protective gloves and dispose of waste properly.

In the video, that is an O-ring, its really supposed to be a flat gasket like on an oil filter. The oring fix doesn't last long (that's what my truck had). I found a flat gasket to fit, Mahle GS33272

Thanks! My gasket may as well have been welded to the adapter, so I had to completely remove the adapter. Fortunately, the Vortec oil cooler video explains how the line fittings work. .. I had never seen this type fitting before. Hope this helps the next person.

Very helpful. On my 98 k 2500, the O ring was a flat plastic, unfortunately. Had to use a box cutter to pry it out. The OEM parts fit perfect. 🤞

Thanks, the whole job took about 30 minutes ( even with recording ), the residual drips stopped after a few days and still no leaking after 3 weeks, so it's good so far. I hope this helped and would be cool to hear how it went for you. Take care

Be careful not to over tighten the fittings back on to the oil filter housing. I did and there went my saturday. I had to go to the junk yard and find the part. Then the parts store then back home to do it all over again. Then I found this video. I should of started with this video. Great job on the video.

It'd probably be best to do this at the same time you are changing your oil, to minimize oil loss. I actually did this with the oil and filter in place and lost a minimal amount of oil, maybe 6 oz. You'll need a pan to catch any oil that runs out and be careful if attempting it with a hot engine.

I only replaced the seal and gasket. So far so good, still leak free after 4 months. I hope it works for you, but for me, it beat paying a couple 100 dollars for a 30 minute job and $5 in parts.

I've noticed Felpro makes a better quality gasket replacement set than GM supplies! The o-Ring seal is a lot thicker than the GM seal and it seals better

I left the unit in place and worked around it, putting the gasket and ring up and over.

I'm trying to remember, but I think that I mentioned in the follow up comments that the two bolts were 13mm, that's all that holds it together. I used a 13mm deep socket with an extension and 1/4 inch ratchet. No other tools were needed except a tiny screw driver to lift the O ring seal out of the channel.

I did not have any trouble removing it, it came right off. On mine, there was only the seal and gasket that could have made it stick.

You don't have to drain the oil, but a few ounces will come out when you break the seal, so be prepared to catch it in something.

I this is old but I have the same problem with my 1994 Chevy half ton 4x4 and the set up lok totally the same, I do all my repairs but being this dam thing had to let go in -13 weather with high winds and I don't have a warm shop as age 56 so I have to lay on ice under it, with a really bad back were any cold kills me, I was hoping to be able to replace it with out removing them 2 steel lines. did you have to undo the line bracket were it changes to rubber hose?, I hope not as that is rusted up an in a bad place, the less o have to do the better for me,, thank you

Were you able to remove the adapter out completely without removing the bracket or did you leave the adapter up in there and work around it while replacing the gasket and O-ring? Just wondering! I recently replaced my oil cooler lines and the two replaceable bolt slots where the oil cooler lines go into the adapter appear to be leaking still. I want to hopefully take the whole adapter out and replace all the parts including the gasket and O-ring that you demonstrated. Thanks for the video and hopefully saving me lots of labor cost then taking it into a shop.

I bought a 2wd Silverado and the gasket is leaking but the adapter put the oil filter straight down not to the side like this one. Is it an aftermarket one or is it the same thing?

I've been putting off doing this for a couple of reasons... 1, time (which I now see it's not nearly as time consuming as I expected) and 2, not being able to find the parts... do you happen to have the GM part number for the gasket? Everything I read said the aftermarket part sucks (and is more expensive) compared to the OEM gasket. Thanks a ton for putting this out there

Oem is the only way to go Oreillys is thinner so it will blow out again I did it 2 time on one truck and 1 own on other and it going 80 thousand on new oem seal

Good video. How much oil did you loose? You left the oil filter and cooler lines connected correct? I just replaced my oil cooler lines which was a large leak. Now I see this has a small leak.

Sorry truck is long gone. The gasket has holes that line up to the bolts the o-ring on mine fit in the channel without issue.

Yes, I just left everything together, unbolted the two screws, gently dropped it down and replaced the seal and gasket without taking it all apart.

I ordered a seal kit from Amazon and it's from Fel-Pro. in the kit it has to paper gaskets and it has two o ring seals. which oring seal is the correct one?? one is like a square O-rings seal. and the other one is round O ring seal

Sorry, I don't know anything about that kit. I used the OEM kit from Chevy and the o-ring was round.

Roger Adkins I appreciate you replying. the kit I had had a round O ring as well but it didn't properly fit. I ended up using the square o-ring and it worked perfectly. I was talking to a gentleman at Napa who works there and he said that a lot of our trucks same year same engine had different oil filter adapters. some came with the square oring and some came with round O ring. I found that really interesting and a good helpful tip

@duvelmademedoit I removed both my 13mm bolts and my oil filter housing wouldn't budge. Did you have to give it a tug or aggressively pull on it to get it to come down. I have 98 GMC Sierra Z71 with 5.7L V8 so exact same set up as you. Any advise?

+Dan Dugan Hey Dan! Actually my oil coolant lines began to leak, so I asked my mechanic if he could pop off my oil filter housing and replace gasket (I already had gasket) while he had lines off. He agreed and surprisingly didn't charge me. He didn't share his secret with me either! Ha ha, sorry I can't be of more help.
