My uncle used to drink in the Swan. I used to stay at an old ladies called Mrs Bicker ton, long gone, such good memories. My mum used to work at the cafe facing the crosses I think it was a chippie called Flores. This video is awesome.

Thanks for sharing, very nostalgic. I also went to Elworth School, in my case from 1957 to 64. I think it was 1/3 of a pint of milk, not 1/2!

Lets have things right!!! The famous Sandbach Crosses are SAXON not Roman AMD the Cross tops are in the Church yard by the enterence. The part Tudor building you called a hotel is in fact the Bear public house, a one time haunt of the highway man Dick Turpin so it is said. You called a couple of square stones in the road cobble stones they are not cobble stones they are Granite Sets. Cobble stones are what is covering the Town square.How do I know all this ? I am a resident of Sandbach. sorry to say age and time are playing tricks with your memory bit I do know it is coming to all of us one day.

I know what he means because when I was little, cobblestones (or cobbles) was the generic name for cobbles, cobblestones or setts. So although we actually knew the difference and the correct category of stones it was always okay to say cobbles. It’s like when you see a group of dogs you don’t have to say a group of a springer spaniels or a cocker spaniel and a collie. It’s okay to just say some dogs.It works the same with houses on a lane such as when he talked of Park Lane. Some are detached, some are semi-detached and some are in a terrace but all are houses.

@@Angusmum You try using just houses to an estate agent and see how far that gets you. And as far as cobbles and sets are concerned cobbles or the correct term cobble stones where collected for free from fields and beaches, now granite sets are a manufactured Item costing money. What the hell good is it giving a person correct information then having you coming along and blurring things with your home spun explanations.

You are absolutely correct. It is totally home spun because the setts that we all called cobbles or cobblestones were right outside the house where I was born and where I lived for the first twenty years of my life. That is what my Parents and my Grandparents called them too. I think it might help you to forgive me for knowing that they are setts but calling them cobbles if I eat a bit of humble pie.

I had a similar discussion if you could call it that with a person who took me to task for calling a boat on the canal near my birth house, a barge. Oh no he exploded - its not a barge it's a long boat. Get a life I say after all it's only a load of old cobblers.
