My first car was a 98 corolla base model, my dad bought it for me when I was 16 in 2002. It had no features at all... I'm talking no power anything, no cruise control, no clock, no intermittent wipers, no takometer, no tilt steering wheel, nothing. However I loved that car, I never had one problem with and I had it through my mid 20s. Sometimes I wish I still had it, I bet it would still be going strong. Thanks for the flashback.

old corollas have simple design. simple is sexy. reliable vehicles. family had a 97 for 13 years (bought used) sold it when it was 15 years old still working in great condition. wish we kept it, if we did it would be my car now.

Isn't it 2009? When they introduced the 10th generation Corolla in '09, they downgraded the materials compared to past gens of the Corolla? In 2014, they addressed the issues of the 10th gen Corolla.

My grandma gave me her 98 VE with 86k miles. Completely barebones, no clock, manual windows, 3 speed transmission, no tachometer, static rear seats that dont fold down, but i absolutely love it. The only major problems ive had is the timing chain tensioner failing, and of course it burns plenty of oil. Other than that its been amazing.

I had a Corolla of this generation. It is "reliable" in a sense... Suspension wise, and transmission wise with the 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic the car is very good, not many problems there. If you get a 3 speed automatic that's where you'll possibly have transmission problems. The biggest problem you'll have with the car is oil burning that starts around 120k. (Due to poorly designed piston rings). These cars plus the 1999-2002 Celicas are notorious for it... Mine had about 200k miles and burned a quart every fill up (300-350 miles). So if you live in an area that requires emissions testing, I'd recommend staying away from one of these (1998-2001) cause once the burnt oil gets into the catalytic converters, it ruins them. But yeah, if you get a 4 speed automatic or 5 speed manual variant of one of these, you'll be ok as long as you check your oil very frequently, and top it up as needed. If you buy one, make sure it's not knocking in any way when you look at it. Despite the oil burning these things should purr with oil in the crankcase. If it's knocking something is wrong. I never actually did full blown oil changes on my car once it started burning oil so bad, I only replaced the filter every couple thousand miles since I was always putting fresh oil in mine anyways. Fresh filters would always clean the oil right up. I also always mixed 5w30 with 10w40, it helped slow the oil burning by about 50 miles. Great review as usual, thumbs up

I have an 02 and it makes a knocking sound, which I'm told is normal for this engine as it ages (mine only has 100k). Here's a video of the sound it makes and I would really appreciate your opinion: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnu3i39ul5Wpidk&ab_channel=SammyT

Yeah I see what you mean, I was given a 1998 Toyota Corolla LE with a 3 speed automatic--- the engine has high mileage ---and it burned oil but only in the mornings when the engine is cold, so instead of using 5w30, I switched over to 10w30 instead and it seemed to have solve the problem; after a few months of driving, I'll check the oil levels and it barely burns not even half a quart. So if anyone is reading this and are in the same situation, try what I did to see if it works for you too..

Nice review! The '98-'02 model years were wonderful Corollas, although the '94 station wagon was no slouch either. My '98 LE has been in the family since new, although I just got it two years ago. After many preventative maintenances and upgrades costing very little money, I just repainted it three weeks back. What a fantastic car; I love it!

My ex neighbor gives me rides to work since we work at the same warehouse and he was going to sell his 98 v6 to some guy for $800. On our way home I told him this was my last week working there since our supervisor (my cousins husband and his cousin lmao) kept telling me for two weeks that Monday I’ll start on this table repairing pallets. 2 weeks straight and I’m like nah no more and told him I’m going to finish this week and leave. But my ex neighbor told me he’ll sell me his car for $500 even in 2 payments of $250. I’m thinking about taking the offer since I drive it everyday. Only thing bad is the the check engine light is on and he says it just turned on one day but everything checked out good. I just need a small car that’s easy to fix for pizza deliveries which is the main reason I’m considering getting it.

@sgx54812 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, only the Corolla LE had the tachometer, so I don't know if you can or not; the letters LE stands for Luxury Edition and it was the highest trim level.
